re: ducks not entering pond
My ducks are very leery of murky water because they can't see what's in it like big, hungry box turtles. When our pond is "dirty" they usually stay very close to shore.

Too funny, I have a duck named Oreo!
I have taken 2 of my ducks to the vet on separate occasions with little stress for the ducks. One for a leg injury and the other for a fox bite. Both were treated the same way, I guess for similar concern of infection. The vet weighed them...
@thechxwhisperer
Forgot to mention, this coop doesn't have a floor. I guess most of them don't because chicken owners move the coop around. That just isn't safe in my book. Not when fox and raccoons are known to be such good diggers.
We built a frame with outdoor grade lumber, then applied...
Hi emmajane07
Thanks, I'm using wide pine shavings. I sift, scoop and rake everyday, heavy sigh. I've often wondered about the deep litter method but I want to see (smell) it first. Wish I knew someone I could visit to know how to do it correctly.
I also use a chicken coop spray to clean the...
I ordered mine from Amazon, here is the link and you can also see my review: http://www.amazon.com/Precision-Pet-Products-Barn-Chicken/dp/B00CMFVP6Y/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
It is the Old Red Barn but I painted mine to match my house. I noticed there are many other coops now on Amazon so...
I learned the hard way about predators I didn't know I had after I lost 2 ducks to a fox. I ordered a small coop after that. My ducks have always been used to me "herding" them from behind with my arms extended out so it was easy to get them in.
If you do a pre-built coop like I did, keep in...
Hi KARy408
Well I'm far from an expert but I have 2 cents to share about your 4th question regarding Pekins going broody. Many assured me Pekins wouldn't go broody "it's been bred out of them" they said. This delighted me since I'm not interested in growing my flock. I now have 7 NEW ducks, ha...
Dear jakesterz
My backyard is on a small lake in a neighborhood. For many years wild and domestic ducks lived here, however, in the past five years there was a rapid decline; possibly from fox and coyote population increase in our area. While all concerns I've read are valid and must be...
I agree for the most part. We went on vacation for 2 wks last summer and when I returned, my ducks were afraid of me. They'd gotten used to their fillin caretaker. It was sad for me. I started sitting with them in the run & talking to them. It wasn't long before they warmed up again. Eat out of...
I just took all 9 ducklings away from my pekin 2 days ago for the same reason. I'm still upset about it, not what I wished for the babies, but I had to remove them. I'm still riddled with guilt because momma acts so upset about it still. But frankly she was acting upset when they were still with...
Thank you Miss Lydia, was hoping to hear from you. I thought they were just bad eggs but I noticed two more pipping now.
My theory: I brought home a new female Pekin from a chicken farm a few months ago. She went broody really fast. I think due to witnessing ducks & chickens hatch. Weeks...
I see this is an old thread but have something to add and hope I can gain some knowledge. My 2 Pekins successfully hatched 6 ducklings on their own in the past 8 days (lost 2 hatchlings, 1 duckling but more are still pipping).
Moms seem growing tired of the staggered hatching. My ducks usually...
