I have six Isa Browns that are about a year old. We have been feeding them Layena (just the regular kind) and I accidentally picked up a bag of Layena Pellets today instead. I'm assuming this will be fine for them, but wanted to check in with you all and be sure. Any input?
A local farmer suggested simply tying the feet together and putting the turkeys under a blanket etc to transport them to the processor...what do you think? I'm taking 5 to the processor and keeping two when i pickup the 7 turkeys. Is this okay or problematic...thx.
I'm going to pickup 7 turkeys - some are a few years old and some are 4 months old. I want to build a travel cage that will accomodate 7 adults - can you post some pics or make some easy suggestions? i have some 4" x 2" fencing as well as checken wire that i'm hoping i can use...thanks
Anybody every butchered birds at 3 yrs old? I have a neighbor wanting out of her birds and offering her Midget Whites to me. I don't need all the 3 yr olds she has and was wondering if it is like chickens...tougher and stew pot for older. I had one response say they've butchered 2 yr olds and...
I don't have a run yet for the turkeys - our chicken run is only 3' - if i cover the turkeys i'd obvioulsy go with something higher and try to cover it...so, you are saying try the 3 yr old tom, eh!! I don't have room in our current chicken coop for these turkeys so i'll probably make a...
We have some laying chickens and have had for a while. I have a neighbor that has 7 midget white turkeys and she is nearing retirement and wants to get rid of all of them before a spring vacation. 3 of them are 3 years old and hatched out 4 babies last October. I assume the standard butcher...
I read on some post here about increasing the protein in their diet and that cat food is high in protein. I took the advice and have been putting a handful of cat food in with their layer crumbles for about 2 weeks. We went from getting 5-6 eggs a day to 7-8. this is out of 10 hens, Isa...
I feel like i remember reading in the past about eggs that have been left out in the cold, but can't find the posts...so, we havd to make a quick 3 day trip for a funeral and no one gathered the eggs for us...the coop probably stayed right at freezing (there was a thin layer of ice on the...
I'm hoping to simply use a "predator-safe" caged area that i can move daily around some pasture - I don't expect to have an indoor "coop". So i guess the question is - at a couple weeks of age, what temperature lows can they handle to be be moved totally outside...I can get electric to the...
I am going to raise some meat birds this year. I want to put them in a tractor that i can move each day - they won't have any "indoor" area and i don't want to get them too early as far as temperature is concerned. I know i'll keep the chicks indoores with 90 degree for a couple weeks, but...

Any thoughts?
I have been using brand name Home Grown chick starter/grower. does that mean i don't need to transition until its time for layer? the chicks are about 6-7 wks old.
We have seperated a bird that has lived for days with worms in its poo - what do you recommend to de worm? - but also, one eye is very cloudy and the other eye isn't symmetrical anymore...it has to have the food held up closely so it will eat, but it does eat. HELP!
1 of our Golden Comets (of 7) that is about 1 yr old has been pretty lethargic for the past couple days to the point, we have to put her in the coop and she doesn't roost - notice one eye is pretty cloudy - have quarantined her and will check on her poo later - any thoughts? Just gave her some...
we have fed some oyster shell and mostly some of their own egg shells back - it seemed to work for a bit - we got 2 eggs with hard enough shells to keep - then a few more soft ones and nothing for several days
Have an ISA brown approx 1 1/2 yrs old. i've had her for a few months - have worked hard on her soft shells which got kinda hard for a while and now nothing for a few weeks - is this type of bird going to be "good" meat?
Also getting 4 golden comets - 18 wks old and laying - to go with 4 1 1/2...
They eat Layena, get plenty of treats after dinner (greens, veggies, etc), some cracked corn, some sunflower seeds, and have a large fenced area to roam...
I have read that maybe some oyster shell for soft egg problems but what if we consistently have 1 of 6 laying soft, the other 5 are normal and fine? They are all in the same coop, same age, same everything. Thoughts?
