I am going to this show :-) We are showing Serama and D'Anvers, my daughter has WCB Polish bantams, Modern Game Bantams and Silkies. Looking for a black or blue Bantam Ameraucana roo. If anyone is interested we have Silkies, WCB Polish, Serama, D'Anvers and Modern Game Bantams to sell.
I am traveling through Illinois on my way to the Central Indiana show. I have show silkies in black and blue, pet quality whites and blue (toe spacing) I have white crested black polish bantam pairs, last years hatch from my breeder pens. D'Anvers, a quail trio and a lavender cuckoo pair. Also...
We had a raccoon get in some ducklings a few years ago. Same thing had one baby left. Put in a stuffed animal that is small and similar in color to his family. It does help.
They are probably fine. We incubate and even with extended power outages very few losses occur. It depends a bit on timing, hatching time you want them warm.
We have had a hawk hanging around too lately. So far he seems happy hunting the neighbors hay field. The birds seem to know when he is around and go inside.
When we do ducks, we dry pluck to get most of the feathers off and then scald and finish the bird. It takes practice. Also the time of year is important as you do not want to try plucking a pinny bird!
4 months is the usual age to begin showing. You will want the bird to have all his adult feathers in. You do not have to belong to a club to enter their show.
Yes, a fox will grab 2-3 at one time. They kill what they can and pile them up and carry off as many as they can at one time. A dog would leave them lay.
They just need some nice fresh water to bathe in and they will clean themselves. The bluish ones may be young blue fawns :-) Give them a chance to get themselves cleaned up before you judge their quality.
Looks like they are picking on each other. For some reason they like to start on the back. Give them something else to distract them. I have used suet blocks, millet sprays and I just saw a hen scratch block that looked interesting :-)
I use the heavy plastic form Menards and wood lath strips. I hold them down with 1 1/4" drywall screws. The plastic stays on and my birds stay snow free...important here in Minnesota!
Laryngeo tracheitis causes a mucus build up in the throat and they suffocate. There are vaccines available for young birds. You can try antibiotics in the water for affected birds. It is highly contagious.
