    Setting eggs 4-3-14

I do not think we are to do the float test as the water will wash away the protective coating. Instead take the eggs into a dark closet along with a powerful flashlight and do the candeling trick. I did not as my two girls would not allow me near the eggs. I just had to keep busy because I...

    Setting eggs 4-3-14

Two little Bantams set on a total of 16 eggs. We have 14 and they came out the nest box today and learned the art of scratching for bugs. They are so cute. I cleaned out the nesting box while they were busy at the other end of the cage. The box was a bit stinky and found two eggs that were...

    Setting eggs 4-3-14

EARTH DAY April 22, 2014 has been so busy. I checked early for little chicks but nothing in the box. At 10 looked again and noticed a little gray head peeking out. I waited until afternoon to tell the Grand Darlins until several more hatched because the men arrived to cut down the major part of...

    David's Hilton Coop

I live in the city with strict limitations of four chickens. Last Summer, I complained to my older brother about the bugs eating my garden. He told me, "I know just what you need and will come over on Saturday and bring it to you. Jim and sweet Fay walked in with a milk crate box with two...

Since last Thursday which is day ten, Tiger is in the nest box (pictured on the left with my little Sophie) and sharing setting duty. When the eggs do hatch about the 22nd. Will they know their...

    Setting eggs 4-3-14

Thank you, American Mom. Since both little ladies are using the same box, I put an x on the 12 original eggs. This morning I removed Tigers green eggs from the last two eggs. My soninlaw is building me a new coop. I will go see the progress this afternoon if the rain stops. He is building it...

    Setting eggs 4-3-14

My little Bantam, Lucy comes out of the nesting box in the morning and rushes to the garden and scratches about 90 mph. She eats her laying mesh and corn and cabbage leaves with grass, chickweed, etc and drinks a good amount of water and poops the gets back on the nest and stays there all day...

This is our nest box. I found it at Walmarts and it is made by Rubbermaid. The lid locks down nicely and the clear plastic front drops down and acts as a little bridge. There is a black border at the bottom which works great to keep the Bantam eggs from rolling out. Sophie the Papillon "Watch...

I found a great black Rubbermaid box at Walmarts. It came with a lid and on the front side there is a clear plastic door that will drop down allowing you to reach into the box. I paid less than $7.00 for the box and when the door is dropped down it forms a little step into the box. There is...

Here in South Louisiana, I wondered why so much insulation until I saw all that snow. :-) Beautiful work on your coop. I enjoyed the pictures of the little Darlin paying with the chicks. So sweet.

Two years after Hurricane Katrina my GrandSon came to visit and He suggested that I get a dog. We went to look at puppies and Sophie was the only girl in the litter. He was right in that I needed a dog. She stayed right by my side through Chemo in 2012. She is still right by me in everything...

Almost finished the base for the new coop. I purchased 18 solid cement blocks that are 4" thick and 8" x 16". I also needed 4, 60# bags of sand and 1 bag of rocks plus my level. It measures out to be 47" deep x 110 " long on the outside edge. The coop house will be raised about 30" off the...

The chicken wire was placed over the doggy pen so that the chicks could not escape while they were small. It is very strong and had chicken wire and plywood on the top so that no animals can get in. The chickens raised a big ruckuss when a cat was brave enough to sneak into the yard and was...
