Narragansett turkeys with leg wounds - scaly mites or ???

One last update about 2 months after the birds got infected, mainly for any future turkey-owners who need to deal with something like this. All 3 are fine. Yesterday I looked for the hen that had the worst joint swelling with deep lesions and abscesses, and was amazed that she had so little...

Narragansett turkeys with leg wounds - scaly mites or ???

Yes, I did keep them together. Turkeys are so social - one of the things I like about them. Both birds doing fine, the female has some scarring, but she's going to be processed in a few weeks and is doing fine with the flock. And whew, I'm so glad this is over. Tylan manufacturer website said it...

Narragansett turkeys with leg wounds - scaly mites or ???

Just wanted to update you on the turkeys with infected feet. One tom recovered completely without being isolated or receiving antibiotics. The other tom appears much better but is still limping. He's not picking at his feet any more so I think that indicates the active infection is over and he's...

Narragansett turkeys with leg wounds - scaly mites or ???

I appreciate your input - looking at some pretty horrible photos of staph online it seems pretty certain that's what it must be. It seems hopeful that the sick pair are eating a lot - the food was full of tylosin, so if the bacteria isn't a resistant strain, I'm hoping for some improvement in...

Narragansett turkeys with leg wounds - scaly mites or ???

Can you tell me exactly what foot rot is? What is the bacteria that causes it? Or is there more than one kind?

Narragansett turkeys with leg wounds - scaly mites or ???

Definitely not flooding - fires are more our speed out here and we just had another big one a few miles from here Is foot rot a staph infection? I think that must be what this is. Bird 3 seems completely recovered, but the other two are still suffering. They are still alive too, so that's a...

Narragansett turkeys with leg wounds - scaly mites or ???

Got pictures last night. One tom is much better but the other 2 are now isolated and on Tylan which is used for staph (still). I'm putting in their water and also using chick starter with antibiotic-laced water mixed in. They are eating and drinking. I looked at the big tom's foot and couldn't...

Narragansett turkeys with leg wounds - scaly mites or ???

Also, they are on grass, but it's dry, not green. The ground is hard, and there is a fair amount of thorny stuff in our fields as usual this time of year. I've had birds get a slight injury and limp for a while, but never seen anything like this.

Narragansett turkeys with leg wounds - scaly mites or ???

At this point just the one hen and 2 of my 3 big toms, but no chickens and no poults are affected which would make me think bumblefoot, except the hen's wound initially looked more like staph and she and one of the toms are still pecking at their feet. I will continue to rub their legs down with...

Narragansett turkeys with leg wounds - scaly mites or ???

That's a great idea but now it's a bit too dark. However I found this posting from 3013 right here on BYC - Guinea foul with scaly leg mites? - and my turkeys' legs look almost that bad, too. Check out the photo. I read the thread to see how this turned out, but it ends with just 2 responses...

Guinea foul with scaly leg mites?

Hi Meandmypoultry, I have 3 Narragansett turkeys with very similar symptoms. Did your guineas actually have mites? How did you treat this condition and how did it go? I've got a current thread if you might be interested in weighing in on this. ~ Roberta

Narragansett turkeys with leg wounds - scaly mites or ???

Thanks for the info - they really aren't super valuable or rare, but I want to take care of them. It's a problem finding a vet who does poultry.

Please help... Cockeral with eye problem :(

So sorry you and your birds are going thru all this on top of crazy weather. From my experience, and of course I'm no vet, the swollen foamy eye is typical of mycoplasma gallisepticum. Fortunately that responds well - and really fast - to an antibiotic called Tylosin or Tylan. I have turkeys and...

Narragansett turkeys with leg wounds - scaly mites or ???

I have a small flock of 30 chickens and 18 Narragansett turkeys including 6 jakes/jennies hatched a few months ago. They are on about 1/2 acre of grass and brush. A few days ago I noticed a round 1 cm pussy lesion on the toe and a swollen joint just above that on the leg of a turkey hen when I...

    Black or Blue Copper Marans

Hi, I am brand new to BYC and this is actually my very first comment! I was interested to see you are in Calif. I'm in Northern CA. Do you know if anyone sells day-old Black Copper Marans out here? I got my Blues from Glenn Drowns.
