Soon to have a Lonely Chicken...

We live in the city and have only two hens(a little over two years old each). One of them is dying. We are going to try and have her out to sleep soon. This will leave us with a lonely hen. As of right now she appears to be perfectly healthy but I want to wait a few weeks to make sure she...

    Less Eggs/Light Yello Yolk

Just wondering why my chickens would be laying fewer eggs and eggs with lighter yellow yolks instead of the dark orange ones they usually lay. They seem happy and healthy and we've lucked out with the weather and it hasn't gotten too horribly hot here. Do some chickens just do this this time of...

    Awake at 4:20am?

On the days I work I very quietly open the door to the run so my hens can free range as soon as they wake up (usually around 6:30 or so). This morning I went outside to open it and they were both chillin' on the ground in their run wide awake, but laying down. I looked in their roosting area and...

    Avian Pox?! Help please!

I found a diseased grakle(not sure about spelling) eating our cats food in the backyard. We caught it and took it in to a wildlife refuge place. The lady there told us it was a bird pox. How worried should I be? They told us to bleach all of the chikens stuff, but I'm sure they drank out of the...

    The First Egg!!

One of our hens laid her first egg! I guess she's still trying to get the hang of it because she was sitting in the nesting box, but the egg ended up out in the run area (rolling around in some poop too of course lol). So excited! Now the other one needs to start laying too!

    Heat on the Way!!

We've been luck here in San Antonio. So far the temps have been reasonable. Looks like triple digits are coming! I have two Barred Rock hens. I have a number of shaded areas and three places for them to get water. They should be ok, right?? They seem to have no interest in frozen water bottles...

    Poop? Vomit? Doesn't look normal...

I'm a newbie and just found this on my patio a few minutes after letting the chickens out. They are both roaming and running around looking for and eating bugs like crazy. Could this be vomit? Or is it poop? And should I be worried about it? They are both acting perfectly fine and have been in...

    Why so LOUD

My 7 week old chickens are SO LOUD when it is getting close to bedtime. Is this normal? Will they outgrow it? They are not too loud throughout the day, but starting around 8:00 until they go to the coop they are squeeking and chirping ridiculously loud non stop.

    6 week old chickens...

My husband and I purchased two chickens that are approximately 6 weeks old. At this age what should I expect as far a behavior goes?? Do they still roost at night? Hey are checking their new place out right now, but haven't seemed to have found the coop where they will be sleeping and eventually...

Ok, I've gotten the ball rolling now...

I will be receiving my chicken coop kit and chicken run extension on Wednesday. I plan on putting it together and getting the supplies ready by no later than Monday. I plan on stopping by some local farms Tuesday and picking up two young hens to start with. I plan on looking all throughout this...

    Two Chickens Enough??

We are looking to have enough eggs just for my husband and I and are considering Plymoth Rock chickens. We are allowed three, but many of the chicken coop kits look like they'd only house two comfortably. Would two chickens be enough?

    Which Chickens Tolerate Texas Heat?

We are looking to get three hens , but my husband is nervous about buying any of the "fluffy" or "showy" chickens because It gets so hot here in San Antonio we want interesting, friendly chickens that lay a decent amount of eggs and can tolerate hot temperatures. Any suggestions would be...

    Hello from San Antonio!

My name is Michelle. My husband and I have decided to raise chickens in our backyard. We don't have a whole lot of space, but we plan on only having three hens, so we think it'll work out fine. We are 100% new to this! but plan on trying to build our own coop and everything. We are considering...
