i guess could be, but usually he is on roost by himself. the hens roost on another next to him. (have 2 roosts in henhouse) .maybe they do it in the pen during lthe daytime

every year my 6 yr. old roo molts and his feathers come in and he looks great. By the end of Jan. he loses his hackle feathers on his back leaving just the down feathers. Looks ugly then. Any info about this. None of the other birds lose any feathers. Not sure if it is bugs or not. Have dusted...

yeah. looks like a cockerell. i'd say it's a barred rock or dominique. i have black sex links and they are solid black with a little red on underside of neck feathers

i think it's definately a buff orpington. got good signs of a roo. if it's feet start getting a lot bigger than the other hens that's a good sign of rooster too.

Does seem a little odd that she has gotten one egg. I got some newbees at end of march and they are laying like regular old girls now. My older girls have quit because of the molt. Tell her to leave them no access to the yard for a few days, that will tell her if they're laying or not. One other...

every year my rooster looses his feathers on his back from behind the wings to his tail feathers. i put diatomateceous earth out every time i clean the pen, and none of the other birds ever lose feathers either. any ideas?

Tell you how to get rid of that coon and more predators. Take a piece of 6in. pvc and sink it in the ground about 3 or 4 ft. (auger is best). Drop some sardines or some other good bait in the bottom of pipe. Predator goes in for bait, and can't get back out. Haven't tried it yet, but my buddy...

Had posted this problem earlier this spring, and thought this problem would go away by now. But no. My pullets of 1.5 yrs. now young hens are just beaten up on by the rooster(dad) and my 2 black sex links(queens of the herd). Whenever the young hens come out of the henhouse into the pen or yard...

Thanks for all the replies. I do have all those bases covered. Just feel sorry for those rascals. The flock police, won't even let them out of the henhouse. Between the rooster and the older girls, I hope this mellows out soon. Thanks to all!
