I just lost our female and our male is lonely. He walks around looking for Ethel and calling for her. I live in Virginia. Does anyone have a line on a female that I can travel to pick up?
Good morning all!
Well...our rooster, Bob, is just doing his job as a rooster, I guess, but he has become too aggressive and needs to go. For the first year, he was a great rooster. He was nice and gentle and you could pick him up and everything. In his second year, he became more...
Hi there!
I have been reading all weekend and just don't know what to do, but I'm leaning toward cleaning out the coop and changing foods.
Bob is our 1 year rooster. I believe he is a barred rock and quite beautiful. We noticed that he stopped crowing this weekend and sounded like he...
We have had the light on for 6 days.
We have a 75 watt regular light bulb in there. Someone told us not to use a heat lamp, but rather a 75 watt bulb because of the frequency of the bulb.
Thank you for your help!
We ten birds - one leghorn, 2 Plymouth rocks, 3 Rhode Island reds, 2 Easter eggers, a lavendar orpington, and one barred rock rooster. They are all about 9 months old and prior to winter setting in, we were getting 7 - 8 eggs a day. Once winter set in and the time changed, we are getting 2 - 3...
Houdini, is one of our barred rock hens. She is also the one that had wry neck back in early August. We were able to nurse her back to health with the help of some great people here!
Flash forward to last week...we noticed that she was holding her neck funny again so we isolated her for a...
Thank you, ChicMom for the advice.
How/where do I post something about him on our site? I don't want to offend anyone or do something against the rules.
Well, Bob, our 4 month old Plymouth Rock has definitely discovered his voice! He crows all the time. It doesn't matter the time except once it is dark, he quits (thankfully). My family personally doesn't mind the sound, we kind of like it, but we fear our neighbors will complain and we really...
Well, I think our Plymouth Rock, Houdini has wry neck.
Saturday night when we went to close the run, we noticed that Houdini was under the coop in her dust bath. My husband went right in and picked her up to put her in the coop and noticed that when he set her down, her neck was to the left...
The girls took to the new automatic feeder really quickly. We didn't have to show them anything. Before my husband got out of the run from installing it, they were already using it.
This is the automatic watering system we have now. My husband is making a different version for the coop itself. The chickens took to it really quickly in the brooder so we just moved it to the run.
This is a copy of our coop and run. The coop is 8 x 10 and the run is 12 x 12. The entire run is enclosed with 1/2" hardware cloth and buried 18" deep.
I hope the girls and Bob will be happy. We have 10 girls and 1 Bob.
We took their water bowl out once we put in the nipple system. We also used a laser pointer to get their attention. Once we got their attention, we pointed the laser pointer on the nipples and within minutes, they were all fighting to get the water.
Easy peasy!
Looks like a band for telling them apart or something like that. I would guess you need to gently cut it off as it looks as though it is cutting into the skin.
