I got him as the extra chick this year. He's about 1/2 the size of everyone else, has a hilariously high pitched crow, and thinks he's 10x his size. No idea what breed he is. His tail was a long longer than it is in this pic. Seems he lost some feathers when he decided he needed to take on the...
Here's the only crossbreed I kept this year. Rooster is a BLRW and the hen is a Red Star. He's about 5.5 months old and is already the biggest boy in the yard.
Next to my 2 year old Partridge Rock hen for size comparisson
I have a couple of roosters that are in need of a new home. Both are about 1.5 years old and in great shape.
1st up is a Red Laced Blue Wyandotte Rooster we've called Gaston. Very big boy but very docile and good to his hens. Not aggressive to the other roosters and is surprisingly pretty...
We got 6 poults that are now about 9 to 10 weeks old and growing fast. They all looked the same and after some research I concluded that they are/were Black Spanish, but as they grow I'm not sure that they really are. Have they just not turned black yet and will or did I not get the breed right?
Like the title says, this is our first year with geese. We got 2 geese of unknown breed when we ordered our ducks this years as part of package deal from the hatchery. They're currently about 9 or 10 weeks old and are already towering over everyone. Can anyone identify what breed(s) we got and...
I've got technically 3 roosters, but really only 2 that do the majority of the mating around my place. They're both BIG RLBW boys and the third is a silver laced Polish. I've got 22 girls running with them, yes I know that's low for 3 boys and I'm working on that. However, I've noticed that...
If it is mites, can she be the only one that has them? None of my other birds have any sort of feather loss except for the favorite hens that have lost back and wing feathers from my 2 big roos. As a precaution, I guess I'll give them a good dusting with some DE first and see how that works.
I have a couple of red star hens that are great layers and pretty docile birds. I have noticed one of the three has started losing feathers around her behind and the area looks pretty red. She eats great, isn't hot to the touch, lays every day, so I don't think it's bothering her much. Is she...
Just wanted to see what other members did with all the chicks that they hatch. Do you sell them? Give them away? Send some to freezer camp? I've got 27 good eggs setting and I'm starting to think about how many I actually want to keep assuming I get enough hens.
I set my eggs on a Saturday evening about 6pm or so, just over 2 weeks ago. It's supposed to be lock down this week, but does Saturday still count as day 1 or would that be the Sunday following?
In my mind, Sunday would actually be day 1 so I would count from there, meaning that today is day...
I forgot to post our total in my earlier post. We set 32 eggs on the 12th. All chickens. Mostly mutts, but some purebred wyandottes in there. My BLRW roos have been busy boys. Can't wait to see what we get out of this.
I took these pics last night of some of the eggs currently going in the bator. They are on day 4 right now. As far as I can tell, these seem to be right on track. You can see some veins in the eggs and the air cells don't look too big for being day 4.
What say you?
The oldest egg was 6 days old when it went in the bator. I'm putting the thin end down on the candler. Our relative humidity here is in the 10-25% range normally. I have read about the dry hatching, so I think I'll ignore the humidity until day 18.
First time hatcher here. Got my eggs all set and running. We're on day 3 now. When I candle them, I can see the yolk but no clear air cell on any of them. Certainly that can't be the case. I assume I should be able to see an air cell at this point right? My humidity is right at about 40-50%...
