Unfortunately she went downhill fast and died. I don't understand. I really feel like I did everything I could. :( I had no idea this would be so hard. I only had 3 hens and this is the 2nd one to die in the same way as the other.
Thanks, Eggcessive!
I've stopped the baths but still keeping her in a warm room. She's still hanging in there and doesn't seem to be getting worse. She ate a little bit yesterday and is drinking a little bit as well. No eye or nasal drainage, swelling or sneezing just a faint raspy honk...
About a month ago I lost an Ameracuana hen to what we thought was possibly egg binding. We never found out exactly what it was.
Now I have another hen, a Silver Laced Wyandotte, who is acting sick but I can't find any visible signs to show me what it might be. I don't really feel an egg (she's...
Thanks araceli, sorry you lost one too. Now we're paranoid the other two girls will have that experience. Neither of them have started laying yet. Hopefully they'll have an easier time of it,
Thanks, Kathy! I figured she was going to die anyway. She went downhill fast. If anything the car ride just ended what might have been prolonged misery. :(
I couldn't possibly do that. My daughter is already traumatized enough. She thinks it's her fault because she put her in the box to take her to the vet and she thinks it was because the box was too small. It wasn't. She's old enough to rationalize that wasn't the case but she's a sensitive...
Thanks, Kathy. Yes, I tried but wasn't able to feel anything. I didn't realize that egg binding could cause such a quick death, if indeed that's what it was. I wish I knew what it was.
Sadly, she just died. :( RIP Talllulah. I really wish I could have helped her.
We got her in a box to go to the vet and by the time we got there she was dead. The other two show no signs of illness. My daughter is devastated. This was her favorite and more like a pet than a chicken. :(
Great info, thank you!
I've seen some videos on eggbound hens and giving them a warm sitz bath which I did. She seemed to perk up a bit after that. I'll go get some gloves and KY (can't wait to see the clerk's expression on that one) and see if I can feel an egg.
My 20 week old Ameraucana, is acting strangely. She's was eating and drinking but is laying down in the yard and her back end is going up and down. I don't know what hens are suppsoed to look like when they lay an egg but could that be what she's trying to do? She's been moving slowly all...
