    Single middle-aged Black Sumatra, Oregon

Good news! I found her a place. A person who has a de facto chicken rescue out near Eugene. I dropped Java off there today, saw the huge fenced yard and how happy her birds were. I felt pretty good about leaving her there, and they'll send pictures! Thanks to you all for your responses...

    Single middle-aged Black Sumatra, Oregon

Due to life things, I have had to move to where I can't have chickens any longer. A friend was keeping my last two, and one of them died yesterday. I hate the idea of that last lady being alone, and would love to find her a new place with company. Due to her breed and age (5 yrs), she is a...

Official BYC Poll: How Long Have You Been Raising Chickens?

10 years last Spring. In fact, I still have one from the first batch - the chicken that's on my shoulder in my profile picture. Henery. She was laying still, as recently as last summer. Amazing lady.

Ended Do You Need A Rollaway Nest Box? - Win A Free Nest Box From Urban-Egg.com

I moved in with my dad last year, as his full time caregiver. I brought my chickens with me, which he seems to like. My chickens went from having a full yard to roam in to having to be in a small run in my dad's yard - which was actually a repurposed catio. Funds are low, since I had to quit...

Topic of the Week - What do you do with all those eggs?

Sunbathing. At least, that's how my girls do it. Just stretching out to get the full benefit of the sun. As for what I do with the eggs, I usually end up trading with people. One friend brings me empty cartons and bread ends, I give him a dozen eggs. Another friend gives me organic...

I'm so glad to see that I'm not the only one who names creatively. My cuckoo maran is named Sonny - after the Cuckoo for Coco Puffs bird.

    Do chickens know their breed?

I only have two ladies who are the same breed (Ameraucana), but they do tend to hang out together. Not as close as some of the other pairs in my yard, however. My blonde turken and the Sicilian buttercup are besties, the speckled Sussex and the barred rock paired up, and the black turken and...

She wants to be a house chicken?

No eggs when I move her, and she seems to be laying still in the coop.

She wants to be a house chicken?

Our set up is like this: We have a huge back yard that is entirely fenced by 7-ft wooden fencing. We can get to it through the garage and out the side door, or through the gate on the side of the house. Our original 6 chickens have free run of the back yard, and this has worked well for the 3-4...

    Half-grown's won't go to bed.

Update: my two younguns still won't go to roost at night. When it's bedtime, they climb up on the shelf behind the miter saw. Fortunately, this shelf was originally intended to house a couple of pigeons, so it's easy to clean, but I still don't get it. Even if they don't like sharing the...

Sounds like I'm lucky to have just the two girls being stubborn. At least it's easier to round them up!

    Half-grown's won't go to bed.

Yup, I'll keep carrying them. I could move the bag...but I can see the older ladies tearing it apart to dust-bathe. And the brooder (large dog house bottom) is in there! They spent their 2nd month of life in that, but now they are being all independent and stuff.

    Half-grown's won't go to bed.

I have 6 established ladies who sleep in the coop at night, no problem. Ok, one of them perches on top as if she's standing guard, but she's a big girl, so I don't worry about her. I got two babies this year, and at about 2 months old, they refuse to go to sleep in the coop or even the run...

    If you have a dog.....

We've got a pug who is totally indifferent to them. But then again, he's totally indifferent to just about any other animals, except in terms of, "are they getting treats and I'm not?". We get a visitor Boston terrier, he torments them a bit when he first comes to visit, but gets over it...
