What puts holes in my eggs?

The ones with the holes are strong good eggs but I also have two clumsy Jersey giants 😂 and wondered if it was from their toes. Magpies (related to the crow family) are smart Wiley beasts who wait for me to go into the house and then bother the chickens. I’ve never had an egg eater so I wasn’t...

What puts holes in my eggs?

About this time of year I get eggs with holes in them if I doesn’t gather fairly often. Is this because a a clumsy hen? Is this what an egg eater does or is this from another bird, like the magpies that live in the neighborhood? Ignore the other flattened egg... I have a couple of rescues who...

Beat up momma hen (sad picture included)

Thanks! That makes me feel a bit better. I’ve wasted most of the day out there checking on her.

Beat up momma hen (sad picture included)

Is the Terramycin Eye ointment from a farm store or a pharmacy?

Beat up momma hen (sad picture included)

I have. This picture was from last night. She’s spent quite a bit of today with her head tucked under her wing.

Beat up momma hen (sad picture included)

Two of my momma hens somehow escaped their broody areas, got together, and went at it yesterday, probably over baby chicks. The one that got it the worst had her comb torn and her face pretty mangled. These injuries she’ll recover from but I’m worried about her eyes. One has been closed all day...

    BCM or something else?

I would be ok with that. I love my barred rocks.

    BCM or something else?

I’ve been looking for pictures that compare cockerels and pullets. Are the white markings more common in cockerels?

    BCM or something else?

All three have slight feathered on their legs and a few white feathers on their wings... the one is the only one that has white markings on its face.

    BCM or something else?

I sent my husband to the farm store to pick up a couple of friends for my lone baby. One of the babies he brought back looks just like the one I have - a black copper Maren pullet. The other one was in the same container but has a white splotched face. Any ideas what it is? And do you think...

    Buckeye or something else?

Thats what I keep leaning toward with her comb, feet, and chessnut colored head. Guess momma was a buckeye and daddy was just wandering through the wrong pen.

    Buckeye or something else?

This is Louise (although for a while I was thinking maybe Louis). She's not showing saddle feathers or a larger comb so I'm pretty sure she's a pullet. She was sold as a buckeye but her coloring is all wrong. Is my sweet girl a barnyard mix or just a bad genetic combo?

    Any idea on the breed(s)?

These two little girls (I hope) were part of a senior prank at school today. I have a broody I can't break so I offered to bring them home. My Jersey Giant took them right in! Anyway... Originally I was thinking buff orp but after looking at pictures and noticing the stripes on one of them, I'm...

    Turkeys with chickens

Are there areas more prone to blackhead? It's not something I've really heard about out here (northern Utah) but then for the last bunch of years I've mostly just read and researched chickens. That's good to know about the Toms. I'd prefer to have hens for the eggs anyway and my roosters could...

    Turkeys with chickens

I was thinking about adding turkeys to my chicken flock this year and have a few questions... Can I get just one turkey be or do they need several of their kind in a flock? At what age would I introduce them and let them start hanging out together? For that matter, if one ends up being a Tom...

Jack or Jackie? Roo or hen?

Thank you all for your input. Little Jack is a sweet one which is why I was hoping he was a she. The subtraction part is the hardest for me. I need to not let my broody hens keep their eggs :th

Jack or Jackie? Roo or hen?

I was afraid of that. His comb didn't red up until just a couple of weeks ago and that's when his saddle feathers started to grow as well. Darn. I have two roosters already and a third is sure to bring on a divorce...unless this one likes my husband, but I'm not counting on that.

Jack or Jackie? Roo or hen?

For the longest of time, I thought this was going to be little Jackie but after taking pictures and looking at the feathers I'm not so sure any more. This baby hatched 10/5/16 so it's 4 months. Mom is a welsummer and dad is a naked neck RIR. What do you think?

    Surviving Minnesota!

I love my naked neck rooster. Igor squats for me and let's me carry him around but he's very protective of the girls and quite a gentleman. He's also a great guard rooster crowing with his crowing and chasing people he doesn't like (he likes the UPS guy though...) I've hatched several batches...

    Broody... again!

One of my hens is broody again. She does this two or three times a year and usually I can get her to stop. This time, she waited until I went on vacation, hid under a bush, and layed six eggs and was sitting on them for several days before I got home and found her. I keep thinking I should just...
