Risk of diseases from backyard ducks

Haha! Okay, thank you! I'm feeling much better about the situation now. Adorable new puppy plus some overly cautious internet articles made me a bit paranoid.

Risk of diseases from backyard ducks

All good advice - thanks! My husband usually puts them into their sleeping-coop at night, and then he wears the same shoes into the house. He admits that he probably won't change, heh. So I have to decide if the ducks are worth the risks. They are cute and funny. Hmm.

Risk of diseases from backyard ducks

I have two lovely, four month old Cayuga ducks. I have raised them from week-old ducklings. They live in a penned-in area of the back yard, and sleep at night in a predator proof coop that we built out of a wine barrel. There is a kiddie pool that we dump and refill every few days in their...

    Help! Aggressive male quail!

Hi quailgirl5678 - Thanks for your suggestions. They are good. I ended up giving him away, and the "gender undecided" one decided to start acting like a male, once the crazy aggressive one was gone. He is mating and crowing, but he does not attack our hands, and he is a bit gentler with the...

    Help! Aggressive male quail!

Thanks everyone. I think that I will get rid of "Braveheart" ( we have started calling him a different name, lol!) I just need to figure out how to do it. I really don't kill things. I'm not judging - I am not a vegetarian - I just don't do it. I have a stepson who is a live-off-the-land...

    Help! Aggressive male quail!

Well, a few minutes ago, he pecked one of the females on the head hard enough to leave a visible wound, so I am rapidly losing patience with him. Being aggressive with us was bad enough, but I definitely won't tolerate him hurting the girls.

    Help! Aggressive male quail!

Quail Jailer - Interesting. Okay, thanks. It sounds like you know what you're talking about. I raised chickens for several years, but new to raising quail. I do cover their pen on most nights. Anyway, interesting that they are not afraid of raccoons. Thanks. :-)

    Help! Aggressive male quail!

farmerjane65 - did you have a quail that was aggressive towards you? Or to other quail? Braveheart is not overly aggressive to other quail - just to us. I suspect that a raccoon has been bothering them at night - it can't get in, but it has him in a state of paranoia and agitation...

    Help! Aggressive male quail!

@ Dragons4u - quail are really small and fragile - I think that kicking him would kill or severely injure him. If I give up on changing his behavior , I would rather give him to someone who will kill him as quickly and humanely as possible.

    Help! Aggressive male quail!

haha! Well, maybe I will give "The Quailtrifuge" a try tomorrow. A gentle version of it. At first, I thought that you were yanking my chain because I am a newbie ! ;-) @ farmerjane65 - I do have another cage - but it wouldn't be predator proof at night. I have put him in it during the...

    Help! Aggressive male quail!

Quail Jailer - haha! Well, that is probably the best advice, but I just don't have it in me to kill him. But perhaps I will give him to someone that is accustomed to processing birds. I think that you are right - we will not be able to correct his behavior - it's just very strange that it...

    Help! Aggressive male quail!

Hi, I am new to this site and I am hoping that someone can help me. I have 6 coturnix quail in an outside pen that is 8 ft x 4 ft. Four females, one male, and one undecided. The "undecided" one came from a different breeder and is a different color (much more red) - it doesn't have the...
