1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
A 1.5 year old buff orpington hen. Doesn't feel noticeably lighter.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Extreme lethargy and today came home to her plopped down, legs out, puffed up feathers...
I was planning for a future rotational pasture system that includes veggie gardens, chicken pasture, cover crop, and rest period. If I mulched an area that's had chickens on it all summer with leaves and waited over winter, would that be long enough for the manure to decompose into the soil...
So the other morning I noticed my banty hen missing. I leave for work well before the sun comes up so I've just been opening the coop and security gate (coop is inside a secured fencing that's inside a fenced pasture) for them to have access to their pasture during the day and then closing them...
A friend of mine told me that hens who are fertilized by a rooster end up laying fewer eggs. I've never heard or read about this but he grew up on a farm so I couldn't completely ignore it. I can't see it making that big a difference but just curious.

Hi everyone. I think this is the forum that this topic would go in but let me know if I'm wrong. Anyway, this is my first year with chickens. My girlfriend is a pre-school teacher and their classroom hatched some eggs as a learning experience. We ended up taking the chicks home eventually...
