We live too far from any chicken vet, so I would appreciate any advice you might have...
We were convinced our beloved chicken wasn't going to make it the other day. I found her in the coop with too much mucus coming out of her eyes and mouth. She fought off a raccoon a year ago and had...
We have a young chicken who has been continuously laying double yokers. All of our hens are on an organic layer feed with calcium added. Her eggs are solid and don't seem to have any other problems.
A couple of days ago, she seemed to be going downhill health-wise and wasn't moving much...
We have a hen who has been limping for about 5 days now. She seems in good spirits -- she will hop out of the coop and find a sunny spot to sit, she has no problem eating and drinking during the day, her weight is stable right now, and she still have a bright red comb. She has been in this...
Hello all!
We have a chicken with an injured foot. We just noticed it yesterday, and everything else aside, she is in good shape. While inspecting her foot, I did notice some tiny, tiny bugs crawling on her feathers. I wouldn't say she is infested, but if I start digging in her feathers...
The only wounds were on her comb and beak and haven't bled at all since the morning she was attacked. I was a little worried, but they seem to be leaving her alone. I think the fracture in her beak actually messed with her nostril. Can anything be done with that? She seemed to be breathing...
To update everyone, Elsa made a miraculous recovery. I'm starting to think she is a bionic chicken. She already survived a dog attack in which her wing bone was broken and punctured through the skin, now to recover from a raccoon? The only reason I woke up that night was hearing a raccoon...
Ok, next question for all you helpful folks...
She was already starting to molt. Now she has quite a few bare patches on her body where feathers got ripped out (but no wounds, thankfully), and she is losing feathers like crazy (much more than regular molting). I'm worried she won't have many...
While she didn't eat anything, she did bring her beak down to her food bowl and attempt to. Hopefully she is getting her appetite back?
She also has some mucus coming out of her eyes and in her mouth. Do you think she needs antibiotics, or anything?
I have been giving her an electrolyte mix. I have been looking at the KayTee food online, and I'm going to go get some today.
When should I start force feeding her? The attack happened 3 days ago, and she hasn't had food since. Does her body still need time, or should I start now?
Also, how...
Thank you for checking! I definitely think she has a cracked beak, especially on one side. The eye on that side has mucous coming out of it. I'm assuming the nostril is messed up and blocked. I don't know if it is cracked there, as well, or if it is just covered with blood. Should I try to...
A raccoon got into our coop the other night and I woke up to the raccoon screaming. I ran out thinking our top hen was dead because of her feathers were everywhere, but about 5 minutes after I got outside, she ran out of the coop injured.
That was about 36 hours ago. She is now recuperating in...
He is!!! Unfortunately that house in the background is our neighbor’s. We live in a neighborhood, and although spacious, there are still lots of people around. He just started crowing, and while it’s soft right now, we know it will only be getting louder.
The white chicken seem to grow the fastest and is a comparable size to his brother now. But when the brother already looks like this, it leaves us scratching our head.
Is this chicken a rooster? We were assuming he is, but compared to his impressive brother, his rooster signs are weak. He has the thin neck feathers, but when I look at pics of other Easter egger hens, some have them as well. I don’t see defined saddleback feathers, but maybe the are coming? He...
Any ideas what this little thing may be at 7 weeks? The roo is a barred rock and the mom an ameraucauna.
We also have two other siblings that look like barred rocks. Same age. One is already starting to form wattles and a bigger comb, so I assume a rooster? The other has a muff, so I'm...
Ugh, it just kills me because they were all coexisting so nicely together the past 6 weeks. The chicks were free-ranging with the mom, the chicks were sleeping with the bigger hens. All was well and it required no extra effort on our part.
They still all seem to be sleeping nicely together...
