6 year old Rhode Island still laying?

I have a 6YO Rhode Island Red, a 4YO Black Australorp, and 2YO Plymouth Rock. We are getting two eggs per day fairly regularly. The Australorp's comb in not bright like the others, so I am assuming she is not laying. We are getting one large egg and one medium-small egg. The RIR seemed to always...

    Ack...Silkies are really dumb

Our two Silkies are three months old and been with the old flock for the last month and a half, and are understandably, the bottom of the pecking order, but otherwise accepted and tolerated by our other five chickens. They have yet to figure out, they need to follow the rest of the flock into...

    Any tricks to nesting boxes?

I have an elevated house, about 2' off the ground with nesting boxes about 6" higher than that floor. I put a cardboard box in there on the floor, just testing them. It got ignored. This has been a blended flock for about two months, now. Now that two of the new ones are laying, it is getting...

    Any tricks to nesting boxes?

The golf balls have been in there since day one hoping the young ones would get a clue. They also scratch ALL of the bedding out the boxes. I'm going to build up the board that retains that a little higher to see if that helps too.

    Any tricks to nesting boxes?

I built a new coupe to accommodate the four new hens and our existing two older hens. With the older ones, we had a very small coupe with two nesting boxes, and they would on lay in one, and it was a dark coupe without windows and only a vent hole, and coupe entry providing light. I made the...

3 1/2 month olds laying already?

I have two Americanas, and Black Australorp, and a golden sexlink. One of them started laying yesterday. Got a second egg of same color and size today. Are one of these know for starting to lay so young? Should I move them of the chicken starter feed and go to layer pellets? Thoughts?

Chickens eating Cedar and playing in the mud

I've been noticing my chickens eating the new sprouts on the cedar in their pen. Any issues with this we should be aware of? Also, they are out in the rain more often than not, and seem to like being in the mud. Any issues I should keep an eye on with their feet?

Found a dead rat in the middle of their run this morning. Possible they attacked it? I've never seen my three Rhode Island Reds be aggressive.

    Hawk attack

I was away today and received a panicked phone call from my wife. Says the chickens were just attacked and to get home. She says she heard a commotion outside with the chickens running crazy around the yard and then noticed a "hawk" perched on the hen house and many dozens of crows flying around...

Leaving golf balls in the laying boxes

We placed golf balls in our hens laying box this last summer so they could get use to having hard white objects around. We never have taken them out. We place three in each of the two boxes. The hen only will lay in the left box, never the right. Now over the last couple days, they have been...

    Chickens eating Turkey fat

We accidentally left the can of Turkey fat out to get hard before throwing away on Thanksgiving. Of course our hens got into it and ate some. Little did they know they were eating cousin Tom. Do you think this is harmful to them?
