    Hardware cloth vs. Chicken wire

Everyone will have different opinions on this, I have had chicken wire on my run for years and have never had any issues with keeping things out. To me the most important thing is ensuring your coop and run is built to keep the predators out. Our coop is off of the ground, our chicken wire is...

    My Exhausted Broody Hen

So this is the first time that I have dealt with this, I have a hen that is broody and sitting on 7 eggs. I have marked the eggs so they are the same 7 that she has sat on for about 7 days now. Well I am not sure how much she has gotten up to eat and drink. I know they only do it for a short...

Such a hard time candling my brown eggs

This is my first time trying to hatch my own eggs. I am on day 9 and I was trying to candle, my candler works great puts a lot of light through the egg, but out of the 8 the only ones I can really see anything in is the two light brown ones. The others I can barely see anything. I think I can...

Silkie Right? Way too early to tell gender?

I am thinking this is a silkie but just wanted to be sure, and I am thinking it is still way too early to tell the gender. This is my first silkie so I am kind of clueless. It is only about a week old I am guessing it is also bantam sized.

    Styrofoam Incubators Club

I have the Little Giant 9300 with the automatic egg turner as well. I have put in a trusted and proven digital thermometer that reads humidity levels as well in there and yes the degrees is always off by about 2 degrees. So I base it off the digital thermometer and I have to have the thermostat...

    new peeps from TSC

We have got all our chicks from TSC, the first 12 we bought were supposed to be pullets we had one roo in the lot. The other 18 we have had from TSC were straight run and ended up with about 5 roos, we normally give them away to people who want roosters at no charge.

Still in 1st year of Chicken raising

When you say poultry netting are you talking about the plastic stuff or the cotton netting? I started with the plastic stuff and it was horrible at keeping things out. We didn't want to spend the type of money that hardware cloth costs but it was worth it in the end. We lost our whole first...

    Easter Egger rooster or hen?

Not necessarily, but it will get redder as they get older. Normally when a hen is laying she is at full red for her comb. All chickens are different though, but she should be laying soon though!

    Hen or Rooster?

All chicks act aggressive at times when they are sorting out a pecking order. They will run at each other and look just like roosters when they do, but it is normal. The pic is not very good, the red lighting throws the color off. Take a picture with better lighting and we may be able to help!

    Uh-oh! I think I got 2 boys!

Yea when they start doing this they sure do look like roos but like they said they are just setting up the pecking order. My hens still do this to each other and my roosters just look at them like they are nuts! lol

    RIR hen or roo?

Lol you will get different opinions, the only reason I say roo is that I have a RIR that looked exactly like that at that age and he was a roo, you may find out that it turns out to be a hen. My dad always says when it crows you'll know....lol

Welcome to the world of chickens! We started out only wanting a few and now we have over 30! lol Chicken math is like he said you buy more on the basis that some may die, but hopefully yours will stay healthy and you can enjoy what we all love! They do become like your children ya know! lol

    Chickens in Florida

Pullets just mean they are sexed, doesn't effect whether or not they can stay in a coop. Yea they will need a heat source on them from the beginning and you want to start it at 95 degrees, and decrease the degrees by 5 each week. Personally I never measured the temp after the first week, I would...
