    Red Stars?

Sometimes a Red Star and a Golden Comet are difficult to distinguish from a photograph. This is because both breeds have a white colored hen in their pedigree. The Red Star, aka as a Red Sex Link (RIR X Delaware) and the Golden Comet (RIR X White Plymouth Rock). However, I believe you'll be...

Are Red Stars as Good as They Say?

First the question of "Are they as good as they say?" Yes, absolutely, they're great layers and have a good temperament. In terms of layers, they indeed are beaten by Leghorns who are the best layers in feather world. But, that's a topic that has been discussed ad nausea, so, we're not going...

Rhode Island Red vs. New Hampshire Red

This is very true, Cpt. Morgan. The only way you are sure what you're getting is by hatching them yourself or obtaining inseminated eggs from someone who you know well enough. I sell inseminated eggs in my area. My inseminated eggs are "laid to order". That is, you tell me the breed you want...

    Opinions on best egg layers

Yes, you're right, they're just like kids! But, I must say I've been very lucky. My five Delawares are in the same chicken house with 5 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Leghorns, 6 Barred Rocks, 5 White Rocks, and 5 Golden Comets. Every one of them is harmonious with the others. It wasn't the same...

    Opinions on best egg layers

I've found the Delaware to be friendliest of chickens. But, what do I know? I just saw pictures of four totally domesticated leghorns. In my opinion, they're the flightiest birds ever.

    Opinions on best egg layers

I concur with the flightiness of leghorns, perhaps the flightiest of all breeds. But I wouldn't consider them aggressive. Maybe some people are taking "aggressiveness" for flightiness. Leghorns are so flighty that they will do anything to get away from you. (fly into you, fly over your head...

    Opinions on best egg layers

If you know which hen is eating the eggs, it's time to eat her. It doesn't get better, it gets worse because the others will develop the bad habit from seeing her do it. Enjoy your chickens! They're great therapists and cheaper than shrinks.

I guess I've been lucky when it comes to aggressive birds. I have only had one aggressive rooster and he was a Black Sex Link. Eventually he mellowed and moved out of my way when I walked near him. Enjoy your chickens! They're great therapists and cheaper than a shrink!

Another advantage leghorns have over other high producing hens is their small size. Thus, another reason commercial layers use them over bigger hens. The leghorns' feed to egg production ratio is unbeatable. Enjoy your chickens! They're great therapists and cheaper than shrinks!

    Opinions on best egg layers

Leghorns are undoubtedly the best layers of all breeds, thus, the reason commercial layers prefer them. Of course, commercial layers keep them in heated chicken houses in 2x2 cages. Their sole purpose in life is to lay eggs. Enjoy your chickens! They're great therapists and cheaper than a...

    Opinions on best egg layers

Hey wesnmads! You don't mean to tell me that big white egg came from a New Hampshire hen do you? They lay brown eggs, not white. Perhaps you have a leghorn or another white egg laying hen in your chicken house. If not, you have a rarity, take the show on the road! Enjoy your chickens...

Rhode Island Red vs. New Hampshire Red

Precisely Jean! The New Hampshire Red clucks her "R's" more like a New "Yoker". Enjoy your chickens! They're great therapists and much cheaper than a shrink!

    Red Stars?

Good catch, Michael O! I didn't think of the multiple breeds used by hatcheries for Red Stars. Indeed it could make a difference, while it doesn't with the Black Stars due to mostly using Barred Rock hens. In my case I never have to worry about that issue because I hatch my own sex links...

Black Stars and Red Stars have the same temperament. Hey, they're animals let's taken them for what they are and use their different qualities to our advantages. Michael Enjoy your chickens! They're great therapists, and cheaper than a shrink.

Are Red Stars as Good as They Say?

Excellent observation Michael! However since I grew up in the Caribbean and in Florida it wasn't until I moved to TN that I noticed severe cold indeed affects the birds - - some more than others. Thanks for sharing the world record for Leghorns, I didn't know such records were kept...

    Red Stars?

Hard to tell from that picture. I don't know any reputable hatchery that will sell you RI Reds for Red Stars. But, if you're in doubt, then, next time instead of ordering Red Stars order Black Stars. They're equally good layers and meat chickens. However, they're obvious that what you're...

Are Red Stars as Good as They Say?

Red Stars and Black Stars are both sex linked birds. Meaning that their sex can be determined at birth with the naked eye because of their obvious differences. Both, Red and Black Stars, are equally excellent layers of brown eggs. I would venture to say they're the best brown egg layers of...
