thoughts on pulling the plug on day light, giving hens a break?

Been at battle with the flock for over all health and egg production. I live in Idaho, and winter is hitting, I have 17 laying hens that are about 18mo, a few maybe a little older, and two roos. Last year was their first winter and we did not heat the coop just provided (if I remember right)...

nesting box drama, the struggle is real!

Oh my hens are driving me bonkers!! We remodeled and expanded the coop because the design of the external nesting boxes was not working, with rain and snow around here when you lift the hatch all the water would dump in the nesting boxes making it gross, and eventually growing mold. New design...

help my hens are homely looking....

My hens have been looking homely and ratty for some time now, I had roosters to blame I thought, so I got rid of all but 1 small sea bright bantam rooster. Still after many months of the other roosters being gone I notice my hens have missing feathers on their back and top of wings, one is...

Suddenly sick hen....not sure what to do

Found my hen just sitting lethargic and not moving, eye closed or half closed, picked her up and she just went limp in a way, and puked some stuff up when I tipped her forward. She is now away from the flock and will stand but just closes her eyes, I did dropper feed some water, and felt her...

    Hens stopped laying

I have 18 hens who are almost 9 months and older. We were getting 16-18 eggs daily. A few days ago we got 10, then 8, 5 and today 0.... :-(! We have had light on a timer in there for quite some time, it's winter here and we just finished a cold spell of teens-20°. During the cold spell they were...

What breed are these red hens?

Sorry the picture is not that great with my big rooster Bob blocking the view, I'll try and get a better one. I got these 5 girls from someone who did not know what they were, 4 light red and one dark. They are super good layers and lay large light brown eggs but one lays a dark brown egg and...

    Easter Eggers yet to lay...

I'm not entirely sure if they are Americans or easter eggers, when I ordered them they labled them as araucaunas anyway that's all besides the point. We haven't gotten any colored eggs yet, but wondering if the color can be a close pink to brown? These two hens have decided to free range...

    Sand for bedding?

Hi, I want to use sand in my coop I've been using shavings but I like the idea of being able to easily scoop out the poop. I'm wondering if anyone has done this and my biggest concern is if the sand will make my coop colder in the winter? We live in the north west so we get cold winters

Sealing the floor in the coop?

Hi all, We built our coop not to long ago, as I was in a rush to get my brood of 22 in a larger space. The coop is raised up and the floor is plywood, I had the great idea of doing the old amish white wash on the inside, which looked cool until it rained and the siding/roofing wasn't done and...

silver crested polish- rooster or hen?

Another of my brood in question :-). This is the best two pictures I can get of this one. It's a silver crested polish. I've picked it up a few times to see if it has wattles or anything but it does not. It's feathering is different than the other one.....13 weeks about.

Not sure if these are roosters or not?

Hi, ok so my hens are 13weeks or about there. I would think plenty big enough for me to tell who's a rooster and who's not, but these two have me a little stumped. My other two roosters are crowing away, and these two are not but they just look so different and are both very dominant at...

How soon can you tell gender?

I ordered all pullets with the exception of my polish and sex link bantams. I have a hunch I may have some roosters because I got some breeds I didn't order and just based on behavior. They are only 4 weeks old

Hi, I am new to the BYC group.

Hello, I am new to the group, and have 27 chicks that arrived around May 20th. Hoping to slim down to about 16-20, but hard to pick which ones I want to let go cause they all are fun to have. Also waiting to figure out how many roosters I ended up with :-)! I am not completely new to chickens...
