Our loudest is the Australorp. We don't hear much out of our Ameraucana. The Australorp is talkative most of the time, while the Ameraucana just lets us know when she lays and when she's mad.
Good to know the leghorns aren't abnormally loud. We have a yippy dog next door that we complain...
I checked out Ideal Hatchery....I had no idea they were so close to me! They are on my side of Austin! However, they were sold out of almost everything. I really wanted a variety of egg colors, so after lots of calling around last Thursday I ended up with chicks from Tractor Supply in Liberty...
Hi there, I've been a member for 5 years, but have never been active. My girls (I still have 2 of the original 4) are 5 years old now, and are basically free loading. I need some new stock, especially during this pandemic when eggs are so hard to find in the store. I purchased my last set at...
Thanks! That was actually 5 years ago, and it is not nearly that clean, lol. Two out of the original 4 are still around, although they are mainly freeloading now. We lost one about a year and a half ago to a raccoon, and my favorite (the Delaware) died about a year ago of unknown causes.
4x4 coop with an added 3 box nesting box (they only use one) and a 4x8 run. Covered on all sides and top with hardware cloth with hardware cloth buried 6 inches deep and 12 inches out to deter digging under perimeter of coop.
Hi there, I'm in G'town. You will definitely need plenty of ventilation, as it gets very hot in August and September. Keep some frozen watermelons for them in those super hot months. I have ventilation on the top of my coop and a window on the side. I keep the top open year round, and cover...
Hi coopmom. I grew up in Dumas. :)
As for sleeping in the nesting boxes, mine have been doing the same thing. They were born around may 1. I was hoping this was something that they would outgrow, but I'm doubting that now after reading many of the threads about this issue on the forum. I took...
It finally stopped raining long enough for me to paint! We have been doing some landscaping around the coop as well (in the rain, of course). The girls have feathered wings and are enjoying the gift of flight. I never knew chickens would be so fun!
Thanks for the compliments! I'll be sure to post a pic after it's completely painted. I got some chacoal gray paint for the siding, and i'm planning on eventually painting the door and the nesting box orange. I am waiting for Ace hardware to have their free quart of paint special again.
Here is a picture of my coop! I went from being close to tears because I couldn't use a circular saw to building a coop! I am quite a bit over budget, and I am planning on painting it dark gray, because I'm not too crazy about the current color.
And here are the inhabitants. They are staying in...
I'm in Georgetown, and my mixed flock of four is about a week and a half behind you. Your olive egger in the first picture looks exactly like mine does. It's neat to see what she will look like next week! What are their names?
I caved to the kids and bought some chicks last night. My sense of adventure, brought to you by 3 doe-eyed girls. We have a RIR named Rosie, a Delaware named Gladys, an Ameraucana named Bunny, and a Black Australorp named Scarlett JoHENsson. I set up a heat light and a Rubbermaid in the coop...
We just got four chicks yesterday.
Rhode Island Red- Rosie
Ameraucana- Bunny
We also have a Delaware and a Black Australorp who will probably be Gladys and Scarlett Johensson
We also like Polly and Hazel.
