    Winterizing the coop.

Mine vent year around except on exceptionally cold nights. Even then I vent during the day. Just make sure the winter vents don't create drafts. If you lock the coop down during the winter it will build moisture and trap gases from the chicken poop. Both will make your chickens sick. What area...

    Cooling 'em down!

on our portable coops (my avatar is a drawing of it) one side opens up and becomes a big screen window. In the front is 2 windows. Above the nest box are 3 more windows and The back is almost all door that has a window in it that is just slightly smaller than the door. So basically I tried to...

What kind/brand water nipples do you use?

Sorry for the late reply. Sometimes from the phone it's hard to find your way back to a thread. The horizontal nipples worked out great. These are what I'm switching all my waterers to now. We had a hiccup ordering the cups (they never arrived) so I didn't get a chance to try them out.

    Baby Chick full of air?

Just an update. I called the guy I know and managed to get ahold of him. He said he actually sees that more than you would think in commercial chicken houses and it's caused by injury but usually just sees it in the breast area. Sure enough when my wife checked on the chick Saturday morning she...

    Baby Chick full of air?

Turns out my wife did get a couple of pictures when I went to get our chicken tool kit. I don't know if you can see the swelling very well in them but here they are.

    Baby Chick full of air?

Both sides of the breast and the neck. She has the same diet as the rest of the chickens. She does free range with the mixed flock but I've had chickens here for years and I've never seen THAT before. I know a guy that works for the Ag department at OSU were not friends so I will have to wait...

    Baby Chick full of air?

I just found one of my chicks swelled up so big it looked like a ballon to the point that you could see the skin and light shining through it from the sun. At first I thought it was fluid and I wish I had gotten pictures. When my wife aspirated the chick it literally deflated. As soon as she did...

What do you have in your flock?

Friday I will be adding welsummers and blue and splash Australorps. This fall I plan on starting a Lavender Australorp project but I don't expect them to be ready for 2 or 3 years.

    Duck enclosure

On our stationary runs for ducks we wait until a sale at Home Depot or lowes and buy whatever paving stones they have on sale for 99 cents. Our ducks aren't stuck in their runs all day tho. They all get to get out and roam the yard as well.

    Miracle hatch?

2 short stories (I promise). When I was a kid I was given an incubator. An old round metal one that the wildlife dept used for hatching pheasant. They had replaced it and a friend of my dads brought it to me. Like any kid with an incubator I rushed around and filled it with any egg I could...

    Free Farm (kind of..)

I read someone "gave" away a bed and breakfast in NY I believe. Someone gets a great deal. The person "giving away" the property gets a great deal. Everyone else gets boned. It's kind of like a lotto or a raffle except the claim there is skill involved since you have to write an essay.

Blue and Black Australorp Chicks for Sale

Sorry my reply is just to mark this thread so I can find it later this year when I get a chance to build a new incubator (mine died in a lightening storm and I decided to build a new one instead of fix the chicken or one.) do you by any chance ship eggs? If so I would be interested when I get...

After refrigeratoring eggs with bllom still intact

I've never refrigerated eggs then took them out but I've always been told once they're refrigerated they have to stay refrigerated. Again I've never tried it so I'm not sure how true that is.

    Need advice please!!!

She would be happier back in the big coop. It may take awhile for thee swelling in her head to go Dave and she may regain some of her sight so I would keep her separated for now. Long term though the big coop is where she will likely want to be. Chickens are flock animals and generally don't do...

How to make sure my duck's toe doesn't get infected?

You can use neosporin for small cuts. My wife orders chlorhexidine from amazon for treating anything more serious.

How to make sure my duck's toe doesn't get infected?

Any triple antibiotic ointment will work. Try to get one without any pain relievers. The ones specifically for chickens are always expensive. I usually just get an OTC from the store or pharmacy.

How to make sure my duck's toe doesn't get infected?

Put an antibiotic ointment on it 2 times a day and keep it clean. If possible put a small price of gauze on it and wrap it with vet wrap but since it's the end of the toe your duck will probably just shake or pick it off.
