I just received my chicks from Cackle hatchery this morning and had the same question after raising shipped chicks with just a heat plate in the past. However, I followed the instructions and added both a lamp and a plate in my brooder. I wanted to get them used to the plate that I plan to use...
I have never hatched chicks before and instead always bought day old chicks, so excuse my inexperience. My Blue Wyandotte hen was sitting on two eggs that have gone through a lot, so I was sure they were not going to hatch. When I had her with the flock, she was sitting in a nest box and when...
I once had a wild turkey poult wonder into my coop. He was very young like yours, and just sitting in a corner of the coop. I put him the empty brooder with heat and food and water, and then called the local wildlife rescue and release organization. They are knowledgeable about raising wild...
Does your brooder have space for two waterers? I have one with plain water and one with vitamins/probiotics for my week old chicks, and plan to keep both for another week and then switch to a bigger waterer with plain water only.
I can totally relate (worrying is my superpower also). I ordered chicks Meyers in OH and they were shipped last week, Monday afternoon. They were shipped to CA and I was worried because the tracking information had not been updated and they had not been delivered by Tuesday afternoon, which was...
My chicks are now a week old, and have liked the hanging mirror from the beginning. They peck at the little beads attached to it. I gave them the Baby Cake treat log yesterday, and am only giving it to them for an hour at a time twice a day so they still eat their starter food. They like to run...
Congratulations! Your chicks are very cute, but I am not sure they look like Barred Plymouth Rocks. Yours look more like a blue breed in the picture. Barred Rock chicks (at least the one I had) tend to be darker, like the ones in the picture, and a white dot on the head (at least on female chicks).
Chewy.com carries chick starter and delivers, and TSC also offers nationwide delivery according to their website. Good luck! Also, our local feed stores are considered essential here in California, and they offer curb side pickup. Did you call to make sure all the local feed stores are closed...
I would remove the cushions, turn the lamp so it is facing more directly down and not towards the middle of the brooder. I would check the temperature on the floor of the brooder under the lamp and on the other side. I think 65 is probably not warm enough for their age, so would not turn the...
Update three days later: two broodies, the Olive Egger and Marans are broken and back with the flock, acting normal. One of the remaining ones, a Silver Gray Dorking, stopped sitting on her eggs today, even though she did so for two days after I moved her. I took her eggs and put them under the...
I moved the other two broodies and left the two in the lower nests with the rest of the flock. So far they are staying in the lower nests. I can keep monitoring and will remove all unmarked eggs from all the nests daily or more often. Thank you for the advice on broody braking. I will try the...
Thank you, Aart! This is what I did this morning: decided to limit to two broodies and break two. Moved the marked eggs to the two bottom nests and put two of the broodies in them. One stayed in right away and the other settled in after coming back out twice. I will use dog crates as suggested...
There are a total of 11 eggs and I do have space for that number of chicks in the coop and run. My friend can take the extra cockerels. From candling it looks like some of the eggs are fertile. Three of the hens have been sitting for a week or more and one just started two days ago. My plan is...
I have no experience with this and would appreciate any help. One of the chicks we got this year turned out to be a cockerel. He is now five months old. We have never had a rooster before, and now that he is here, four out of my 20 hens have become broody. I have a couple of questions.
1) How...
I have all the breeds on your list except for Australorp. The Speckled Sussex is one of my favorites, calm and friendly, but broody when she was younger. I have four Swedish Flower hens and they are all beautiful and do well in a mixed flock. They are slightly more bossy with other breeds than...
Thank you! When I first started raining chickens, a local expert recommended the Delaware as a breed that does well in our area, so I am happy to know he will do well in our climate.
This chick is 9 weeks old and was bought from a local farm store that mostly buys from Ideal hatchery. The chick was sold as a sexed White Plymouth Rock pullet, but it looks like a cockerel to me, and obviously is not all white. I am fine with having a cockerel since I have 20 hens and no...
