I was going to say, that doesn't look like a dog-proof trap.
Why dog proof? Because my dogs roam the farm (terriers and Rhodesian ridgebacks). We don't bait with stuff the cats would like, so there's no reason for them to poke at the traps.
Not saying 70% of all raccoons in my area. What I said was 70% of the raccons I killed (by my barn, shop, house and outbuildings). What you fail to recognize is, the possibility that sick ones are more likely to boldly go where there clearly are humans and dogs. Likely or not, those are hard data
So here's the deal for ME:
We have a small horse farm. We have dogs, cats and now chickens. I don't go out of my way to hunt down raccoons. If they stay across the creek, they can forage through the compost pile to their hearts' content. However, when they come up to the barn, workshop...
Really interesting perspective. I missed this earlier (still learning how this board's software works). I suspect there's a lot of truth there (gentle roosters lead to gentle treatment leads to good results, feisty roosters lead to more aggressive correction which leads to good results) Sort...
We're in Maryland. Our neighbor down the road has her chickens out virtually every day (except in large snow storms-maybe one every year or two). Where the house sets, it has a southern exposure and is where snow melts off first. I guess we'll have to see if they'll be overstressed. Their...
When they get a little older, they will free range the farm (35 acres). We're waiting until they're a few months old. Right now, we're working on training them to come to voice and getting them used to going to the house at night.
Agreed. However, seeing how the linked trap works, and the strength of the spring, I would never try to release it while holding down the raccoon by myself. Two people? maybe. But as you said, why would you ever do that? :)
You need to make sure trapping is legal where you live. However, IF it's legal This trap is outstanding (by report ;) ). The only caveat is, there is no option of catch and release; the raccoon will have to be dispatched.
Thanks everyone.
We know what predators we have.
We live in Maryland hunt country so there are fox. They're pretty dealable however. They attack things in the same way dogs do. We also have raccoons and they are more of a problem, however living on a farm we have more options for pest...
My wife and I talked about what we've read and the advice posted here. We decided to call the hatchery where we got our chicks (Murray McMurray) and ask their opinion.
Their advice was to handle them regularly, correct behavior, but gently. Keep them all in the flock together and see how...
Great information, thanks!
Yes, the indoors part of the chicken house is 192 square feet. (16X12) with 8 foot ceiling. We are building stairstepped roosts and nesting boxes, so more horizontal square footage. There is a penned yard that they have access to all day, adding an additional 160...
Hi all,
My wife and I built a chicken house, with fenced outside yard (and soon a second, separate yard).
Here is our problem:
We bought 42 hatchlings of a large number of breeds, just to see what we like. They were supposed to be all hens. We're now at 9 weeks of age and we're sure there...
Hi all,
I've been following BYC for several months, looking up specific questions and I decided I needed to join this helpful group. We have a small farm in Maryland. YEARS ago we had a few chickens in the horse barn, but the local fox got them all after a few years. We decided we weren't...
