    Pullet or cockerel

Let’s play the game! Hen or Roo? Supposed to be a speckled Sussex but the legs are yellow - so I guess some kind of mix. Sister speckled Sussex is in front At bottom of first photo. Also any idea of what she/he is mixed with? Not pure bred speckled Sussex due to yellow legs. Approximately 8...

    Water belly or acitis

I kinda figured it was bad and probably would not resolve itself. She still enjoys her mealworm snacks and hanging out with the flock. I’ll try some of your feeding suggestions. If she starts to look really uncomfortable then I will put her down.

    Water belly or acitis

I have a Rhode Island Red that might have acitis also known as water belly. She went through her molt and seemed fine all winter. Symptoms have been subtle and slow to progress. She had been waddling and at first I thought she was getting fat. Then I noticed she was having more trouble walking...

Hen dropping eggs outside nesting box

I have a black Austrolorp that will sometimes leave the nesting box before her egg is out completely. I have caught her a few times hunched over and watched her finish popping the egg out onto the ground. I have even caught it in my hand a couple of times. Lately she does it almost every time...

    feather loss

Hi Gresh, I would love to pick your brain some more if you don't mind. I have been giving my girls a blend of game bird feed and layer feed now for about 2 + weeks now. I haven't noticed any new feather growth yet although I am not finding as many feathers scattered around the coop and run...

    feather loss

Thanks so much Gresh! I really appreciate your in depth answer! Nothing new in the coop that I can think of. The first I noticed the feather loss was just before I was going to do a big spring cleaning - so I had just been doing basic maintenance. Not adding anything or doing any real fancy...

    feather loss

I have a flock of five hens - no roosters - my first flock. I first noticed the feather loss on one of my Black Austrolorps belly. Almost all of her feathers were gone. Then I noticed my other Austrolorp was missing feathers on her belly also. Then I started seeing feathers from the Rhode Island...

    Feather loss

I am having a similar issue. I have a flock of five hens - no roosters - my first flock. I first noticed the feather loss on one of my Black Austrolorps belly. Almost all of her feathers were gone. Then I noticed my other Austrolorp was missing feathers on her belly also. Then I started seeing...

    Mites or molting?

So weird we have such similar symptoms. My girls are getting tired of getting turned on their backs and given thorough inspections also! Same here on the depluming mites - no irritated skin. It does seem like they are starting to miss feathers in some other areas but not like the bellies. No...

    Mites or molting?

Funny that one tried to aim at you! Hopefully their aim will continue to miss! Lol I can't see anything as far as mites or lice and really no irritated skin. But also no pin feathers yet. One of my Austrolorps also has a little ragged patch of feathers in that same area at base of tail. Same as...

    Mites or molting?

Also didn't see any evidence of mites. If they have depluming mites that are too small to see the skin doesn't look too irritated which I think it would be (from my research) same as yours!

    Mites or molting?

I thought broody too at first - but they are not spending more time in the nesting box, not hissing at you when in there- and what is the chance of two going broody at the same time?

    Mites or molting?

Huh! Mine look about the same! Right now my two Austrolorps have it - one more than the other. The two Rhode Island Reds show a little feather loss but not their whole bellies. Then the Arucana nothing really. I have noticed more feathers in the coop - mostly black and red. At first I thought...

    Mites or molting?

How long after her feathers fall out do the pin feathers emerge?

    Mites or molting?

CK! I hope not! Just looked them up and depluming mites sound nasty and hard to get rid of. Their skin doesn't look irritated, but did see a small scab yesterday. Gonna inspect again today for depluming mite symptoms.

    Mites or molting?

No - too many neighbors dogs roaming. But we do get wild birds sneaking into their run

    Mites or molting?

I've inspected the one that has the most feathers missing during the day and didn't see anything. Did the paper towel trick last night and nothing. But maybe should inspect her after dark also. The crazy thing is that her belly is almost bare! I do see a bunch of broken ragged feathers and she...

    Mites or molting?

Thanks for your advice teach1rusl! Two of my girl's I can pick up pretty easily - luckily one of them is the one with lots of missing feathers. I did grab her in the football hold and looked closely at the feather shafts and didn't see anything - but that was during the day - so maybe if it is...

    Mites or molting?

I have five hens and yesterday I noticed that two of my girls have lost big patches of feathers - mostly on their bellies. I can't tell if it is a mite problem or molting. The skin where the feathers are missing doesn't look red or irritated. I checked under the roost bars last night and...

    one hen stopped laying

Thanks to everyone for all your input and advice! She laid an egg sometime last night or early this morning! But I am going to keep all this advice in mind. I am a nervous mother as I am fairly new to chicken keeping!
