    how do you tell how old a chicken/hen is?

    I've been told by someone my hens are 6 months to a year, but none of them have laid one egg yet. Then yesterday I was told they look way younger than that, and you can tell by the size of their combs? How do you roughly tell the age of a chicken?

    So I just bought 3 hens and a cockerel...

    1 of the hens is a year one has just started laying and the other hasn't started laying but due soon I've had them about 1-2 weeks now, and not a single egg. Any tips on why or how to make them start laying and if they're stressed and just general tips? Thanks in advance
