Comment by 'BigFuzzball' in article 'Are Herbicides and Pesticides Safe for Chickens? Exploring the Potential Risks and Precautions'

Great info thanks ! Have always been mega cautious and kept mine in if using anything I wouldn't like on my skin or our fruit or veg to give it time to degrade etc.

Growing back different colour feathers after moulting

So did we ! Found an old article about the original 'Fentons' in the USA, in it they quoted eggs as smaller than average sizes and pale blue, pale green or some pink tints so that's what set us off along the 'Fenton' throwback gene possibility.

Growing back different colour feathers after moulting

"Project Chameleon" sounds interesting !! She'll turn 4yrs old in November. Been a great buy, a very vocal number 2 in our flock pecking order, normally lays creamy coloured eggs with a pink tint so causes comments from any friends & neighbours having eggs !

Growing back different colour feathers after moulting

Hi, anyone know why our Cream LegBar chicken (believed to be a distant Fenton descendant) has had a partial moult BUT has grown back a beautiful grey & white tail plus patches of single or small groups of grey & white feathers. She's such a beautiful bird with normally perfect markings so this...

BYC Debate Thread- What's The Friendliest Chicken Breed?

'Magpie ' breed, we've got one and she's the friendliest we've got. Mostly ours (Welsummer, Buttercup & Cream LegBar) don't mind being picked up but our 'Magpie' is the one who sits on your arm or even shoulder ! Most 'unfriendly' we have had (in our 13yrs) was 'Ronnie' our constantly...

Review by 'BigFuzzball' in article 'Chicken Behavior The Ignorant Gal's Guide To Things No Sane Person Would Tell You About Chickens'

:thumbsup Absolutely brilliant and very VERY true ! Have experienced the same (apart from roosters - we're in a village and can't see the neighbours ever accepting one lol). Ours love digging out all the pebbles and gravel from around the patio edges and covering the whole patio in walking and...

Topic of the Week - Coop Bedding and Waste Management; Deep Litter Method etc.

I use wood shavings and Easibed chippings on the floor with lots of paper shredding sprinkled on. The actual floor is a base of an oversized plastic pallet with a black corrugated uPVC house (under laminate etc) sheet from a building merchant - it's thus insulation and washable as well as...

    Interesting color......any Cream Legbar experts?

That's my point, when we got her, we were told 'Cream LegBar' (no mention of pure) and to expect blue or green eggs. She however lays pink tint & a one-time 'Fenton' breeder said with leg length, colouration & egg shade together, it more describes a 'Fenton'. My 'question' therefore is "just...

Comment by 'BigFuzzball' in article 'The Coop De Grass'

That whole thing looks absolutely fantastic, puts ours to shame (my Grandkids old plastic 'Garden Wendy-House lol) adapted obviously, has plastic flooring, sits anchored on a large plastic pallet, plexiglass windows instead of just openings, and now a 'Titan' up/down automatic door ! Some prefer...

Chicken 'sudden death' - Very sad & shocked, anyone any ideas as to cause please ?

Had been away on a really enjoyable much needed holiday (UK) and went to collect our 'flock' from where they board, this time 13 nights, one of the owners went off to fetch all ours but returned saying he had some bad news - one of ours (Maisie) had died in the nestbox, was lying on her side and...

    Interesting color......any Cream Legbar experts?

Hi Gary, Pictured is our (alleged) almost 2yr old Cream LegBar - Lexi. The place we get our birds from are brilliant and always describe and give breed names etc plus the breeder if it's not one they've hatched. Lexi though, so we believe, shows more colouration and size of a 'throwback' bird...

    Hen has respiratory infection

Get an antibiotic powder to mix in the water (Tylosin) much much easier and less stressful than injections or giving it orally. Then either a 3 or 5 day course should do the trick.

Comment by 'BigFuzzball' in article 'Who is Laying.....and Who is Not? Butt Check!'

On egg laying & cuddles...... Currently have a mega broody 15 month old Buff Sussex (we've never had a Cockerel) but who in 12yrs of 'hens keeping us' is only the 3rd broody one ?? I get her out every afternoon for a cuddle, poo, food, water break and she's THE funniest running around having a...

Comment by 'BigFuzzball' in article 'Chicken Treat Chart: The Best Treats for Backyard Chickens'

Was given 2 new girls (a Buttercup & a Magpie) for birthday just over 3wks ago, they've settled in a treat already, laid their first eggs within 3 days and haven't stopped. They are literally like 2 feathered 'locusts' eating anything and everything they're given lol. Absolutely love the treats...
