Eekgads...Chickens! Yup, that's pretty much the reaction I get when I tell people we've started raising chickens in the 'burbs. But, the conversation usually turns to "Why?" (Which is interesting that BYC is doing their poll.) The answer is bug control, eggs, fertilizer & simply, they're...

    Raccoons!!!

I am so sorry to hear of those raccoons. Unfortunately, I agree: if they've tasted chicken, they'll be back. Good luck!

    What keeps attacking them!?

We had the same problem last year. After buying a gamecam & setting it up, it turns out we were feeding ALL the local wildlife! Game came showed us 2 raccoons, 1 possum AND 3 foxes (mama & 2 younguns). Yup, we took care of those problems! I agree, put your chickens up safely at night &...

Silkie/Silkie Mix?? Where is the tail of my Silkie??

Hi! It's a beautiful bird & has such interesting colorings! And I think this one's a cockerel. I've had 2 local sellers (out of 3) that sold me silkie crosses (when I was looking for purebred). This one of yours looks like the aracauna/silkie cross I had...including the rumplessness...but...

I agree. Separate the roo fr the hens. When they come out of their broodiness, you can put them back together.

    Bear Attack

I'm so sorry for your lost chickens. In VA if a bear kills livestock, you can get a special permit to shoot them. Try asking your Fish & Game dept!

Is there any bug chickens WON'T eat?

My chickens won't eat fuzzy caterpillars or tent worms. Oh, also a local wood-boring black beetle.

I love wildlife....but not to the expense that I will allow them to feed on my chickens. Dispatch the predators!

Found my dog in the coop.....

    Sorry, but I've got a 7lb maltese & I don't trust HIM w/ the chickens. I wouldn't chance it!

    Raccoons are horrible-slaughtered 30+ birds

I'm so sorry for your loss! Only chick folks understand how horrible it is to see that type of massacre! Last fall, we caught 2 coons, 2 possums & filmed 3 foxes on a game cam. I invest heavily into hardware cloth.

How long til the predators come?

I got my first chickens in the spring & didn't have any predator problems until THAT fall.

What kind of predator would do this?

I'm so sorry for your friend's loss! The predators that kill w/o taking the bodies away in our area are Racoons (they rip off heads) and Foxes (they get into a killing frenzy & kill as much as possible) and dogs (they do it for fun).
