    My turkeys are 9 weeks old. I started them on turkey starter and then grower turkey feed. Can anyone tell me when I should start feeding them finishing feed? I feed all non-medicated feeds from a local mill that grinds their own feed and I have been very happy with all their feeds...

    How about watermelon and cantaloupe seeds?

    Thanks for the advice! I just cut up a muskmelon and a honeydew melon so I will take the rinds and insides right out to my girls! They should stay busy for awhile with that!!

    can chickens eat cabbage, carrots and cucumbers

    I knew about hanging a cabbage in the run but I did not think about it distracting them when I add new hens to the flock. I will certainly try that as I am adding two hens in a week and 8 more in May. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to introduce new birds to the flock?

    I worry about the coyotes, especially after reading about a member losing his whole flock to one! I buried my hardware wire deep all around the run and close the chickens in the coop at night. Would having a couple of solar spot lights around the coop help or will it just show the coyotes where...
  6. My Grandson made a great outside door and I made the ladder. I love the big old hinge he found down in the cow barn to use on that.

  7. The coop sits on blocks of cement that the 4x4s sit right down in. We put the coop in place with our backhoe that had large forks mounted to the front bucket.. It worked great!

  9. The neat door was made out of leftover bat and hardware wire! The hinges and latch are what cost me! My Granddaughter loved the run!

  10. MY finished 8x8ft chicken coop! Was built on rollers in the machine shop and rolled outside to put the roof on and finish off the whole inside. I took many ideas from all I have read on this site! I had a lot of the materials around the farm(steel roofing, boards and bat, solid door, storm door, insulation, luan board, pressed board, windows, cement & 2x4s,). Now my children realize why I treasure all the stuff I save from other projects. Note the picket fence I made from the leftover bat! I must tell you my 19 year Grandson built most of this coop---without him it would have never been possible! Thank you Gabe!!!

That is because our winters can be fierce in Upstate New York! More chicks to come...2 Araucana, 2 Ridgeway White Leg Horn, 2 Barred Rock and 6 Buff Orpingtons will arrive in 3 weeks. Anyone have any ideas on how to introduce new chicks to the flock?

  12. The run became a family affair. We used hardware wire and buried it over a foot in the ground. The corner & center poles are 4x4s and are cemented in. We have a real problem with Fisher cats and coyotes so I am afraid to let the chickens free range right now. I have a hawk who spends part of the day on the barn roof too! The run is 24 ft long and 10 ft wide. My son -in -law and Grandson did most of the work on the run in one day after the posts were cemented in and dried. Note the great view the chickens will have......overlooking the pond and fields!

  13. A glimpse at my roosting poles that are 2x4s which gives the chickens a nice flat surface to roost on. I put trays under it that are filled with pine shavings now. I bought them at Lowes. I made a ladder to the lowest roost as the chicks were too small to get up there on their own. I think eventually I will take the ladder out. Let me know what you think!

  14. The vinyl flooring is covered with shaving now. I made a high roost too as someone said the Orpingtons liked their roost high. The lower roost is higher than the nesting boxes(I read to do that). Getting the inside finished was fun!

  16. I put a slanted "roof" over the nesting boxes to deter roosting on the top( more advice from this site). They hook up for me to gather the eggs. I also enclosed the front of the garbage can area with a door that slides in and out. Now the chicks can not get in there. I keep the feed and a bag of shavings in there. It is convenient for me. I have trays in the nesting boxes for easy cleaning. Right now I have the nesting boxes blocked off with wire(some more advise from this site). When the chickens are old enough to start laying eggs I will take the wire off.

  17. I have 2 heat lamps--one over the water and one up above a roost. The chicken coop is insulated well so it stays warm in there with just 4 chickens and the heat lamps!
