My girlies are just shy of 7 weeks and have started supervised free ranging...and i notice that anytimr they come across a fluffy feather, be it theirs or anyone elses, they fight over it and gobble it up. Omg theyre so weird
My 4 buff orps were ordered as pullets from a local reputable farm store in our area. So far nothing has screamed "roo" to me about any of them. They all look and act the same. They all feathered at thr same time, developed tails at the same time, all the same size, none particularly roosterish...
They are officially out for good! Its chilly today, about 40..tonight in the 30s. Heat in the coop brings temp up to 60s with yhe pop door open and 70s with it closed. The silly birds are digging in the covered run and trying to eat some snow alomg the edges lol...they go in to eat and warm up...
Looking for input on whats safe and also convenient for storing feed. The coop is attached to a separate shed. Obviously i will need to put the feed in some type of container with a lid. Is it best stored in the shed? Or can it be kept outdoors so long as water and critters cannot get in...
My girls have all their feathers in except for their head/neck. No more fluff anywhere on back or chests. They are only 3 weeks old. I have kept them a bit cooler than the norm. Is this fully feathered or does head/neck have to be too to be considered
Id like to eventually try to train my girls to come when called. They are 3 weeks now and spend days in coop/run, will be out there consistently by next week. I have a small cow bell ive been ringing before throwing treat down in the run. My hope is that eventually wjen they hear the bell they...
I realize that they look like their having a seizure when theyre in there...but i swear one of my chicks takes a while to "snap out of" her dust bath frame of mind even after she gets out. She gets out and its almost like shes so relaxed it takes her a few minutes to get her sea legs again...
First question, will 1 nest box be enough for 4 or should i have 2?
Also, should i not bother making them until they are ready to lay? Im thinking ill avoid the struggles of them trying to sleep in them/on them if i just leave them out altogether for now. Is there some reason to put them in now...
..and omg they made me laugh. It was in the 60s today so i took them outside for a bit. As soon as the sun hit them they began rolling to their sides, stretching their wings, sunning their under bellies lol. They are a trip.
Well the chicks are officially at room temp round the clock now at 18 days old. For the last 5 days or so they had heat only at night. They move to the coop hopefully within the week as soon as its done. So tonight is officially first night without the red light and in the dark. No freaking out...
In the fall we had some old hay bales for decoration that we ended up leaving outdoors all winter. Is it ok to put that in the run as something to peck at or jump on? Or is it bad or moldy from being outdoors in wet weather all winter
I wanted to add my experience on brooding as a first time chick parent, as i approach their 3 week birthday:)...hopefully to help anyone who is also new, who is busy researching what works.
HEATING THEM. This is big topic around here. Do you need to be careful and diligent if using a heat lamp...
Im sorry but the idea of a peice of wood skeeves me out. As it is i have linolium on the floor for easy cleaning and a gigantic heayweight boot tray as a poop board. The idea of poop sitting on wood...i just dont like it. As it is right now they have a wooden roost in their hrooder and when it...
How old were they when you removed the lamp and went with household temp?
I know the standard formula, but i feel like my chicks have tolerated cooler temps than that. They are 13 days old and happy/healthy at 74 degrees under the lamp. If i continue to go down in temp next week, any further up...
I have noticed a clear difference in personality in my 4 pullet chick flock the last 2 days. 1 chick is ALWAYS the first to roost on my arm, with a second close behind. If one of the other 2 tries to be first to roost they quickly get put in place. Now They wait their turns. The 1 that is always...
We are building a 6x4.25 coop for 4 chickens and we built it attached to a 12x12 shed (no access into shed however, the walls just abut eachother). The coop is 4 feet tall. I need to add some ventilation but i live in MA so id also like to keep the coop as warm as possible in the winter. Im...
We are completing our coop this week and i always assumed the water would be inside until i just read something that states water should be kept outside? That as long as chickens have access to water at daybreak they are fine to go the night and that the decrease in moisture in the coop as well...
So my chicks are 10 days old and i anticipate the coop being complete in about a week to week and a half. I have thoroughly enjoyed brooding them indoors, watching them grow and having them near so my family can spend time with them. I do however plan to move them out at about 3 weeks old. I...
