Closing, sunken eyes on mature Buff Brahma

I have a chunky buff Brahama maybe six years old, still laying, but her eyes are getting very squinty and somewhat sunken. Her crop is full (she can find the pellets) but her pecking accuracy is diminishing. If this continues she will be blind. Any ideas?

Chickens feeding/scratching under Camphor Tree: a Problem?

That's what I'm thinking... I can find all sorts of websites that list camphor as toxic, but I also see songbirds gorge on the seeds/fruit and they're not falling out of the sky around here.

Chickens feeding/scratching under Camphor Tree: a Problem?

We have some mid-sized camphor trees (Cinnamomum camphora) here in our backyard in Florida -- right where our chickens would be free-ranging. Anyone know if this will be a problem?

Use "Funky Chicken Facts" to inform citizens and help make your case.

We've developed a list of 20 "Funky Chicken Facts" that we are handing out at events. These facts (with links to sources) include intriguing generic chicken facts, but also include four facts specific to our campaign to re-legalize hens. These four deal with noise, code complaints in the City...

    laws in plantation, florida

I would encourage you to resist the unstated, implicit standard (no noise can leave your property) and instead compare the egg-laying cackle to occasional barking or cat fights. A neighborhood is not a place of silence, but rather one of noises we don't control. Our noise ordinance says...

LORE info on Sarasota Florida is misleading

Thanks for your suggestion of pushing the City Manager to fulfill obligations. That's one route we considered but ultimately rejected. One one reads the wording (see below), it becomes clear that this is not really a solution. To start with it has to be for a "specified limited period of time"...

LORE info on Sarasota Florida is misleading

The LORE map indicates chickens are legal in the City of Sarasota. That's theoretically true, but as a practical matter people with chickens are subject to a fifty dollar a day fine. The City Manager or his designee can issue a permit, but it can only be temporary and there apparently needs to...

how to secure a pop door

I'm a believer in the guillotine style door. Ours slid up and down in simple wooden guide tracks and the bottom settled in a slot so that no animal could get a nose under it. Since it was relatively heavy and smooth, nothing could lift it from the outside. We hooked the top to a pair of pulleys...

How to address fears that backyard chickens will increase predators?

One argument we are hearing is that chickens will increase raccoons, opossums, rats etc. We have challenged this thinking , but wonder if anyone out there with more data, facts, stories or anything else to challenge this neighborhood fear?

Chicken Laws in Sarasota, Florida - Group trying to get them changed

Tonight the Sarasota City Commission voted to direct staff to work on proposal that would legalize backyard hen keeping within the City. This is a major breakthrough that took 264 days. The good news is that we should have something for the commission to vote on in 7 months. The reality is just...

Illegal to keep chickens--How did this first happen where you live?

I'm getting the picture that our local crackdown was the result of one household that pushed the envelope too far and the city commission, instead of using nuisance laws to solve a more or less unique situation, passed a city-wide ordinance giving them authority to fine $50.00 a day. It is...

Has anyone ever been in a pilot project as a first step to change law?

Bedhead... We are considering this approach here in Florida in two possible forms. Current rules in our city ban chickens but give the City Manager the ability to approve them for a limited time for a public purpose. We suspect that provision was placed there to accommodate 4-H projects, but...

Coalition of Animal Sanctuaries Urges Ban on Backyard Chickens

A few more points.... their second paragraph refers to "backyard chicken-keeping by amateurs". Amateurs are people who do something for love, not money. It seems like they are indirectly suggesting they would prefer backyard chicken-keeping by professionals. We don't refer to people who have...
