    Eye infection/injury vs URI?

9 month old French Maran. Her eye was swollen shut. She only opened it this much once I started handling her. Other eye is totally fine. Could this be just an eye injury or infection? Or the start of a URI? I have tylan soluble powder on hand I can start her on immediately. Rest of the flock...

    Pullet or Roo? (Easter Egger)

Yes I have our head rooster (Richard) who is a couple years old. And I have 2 other young roosters who hatched at the same time as the one pictured here. But the other 2 are VERY obvious roosters.

    Pullet or Roo? (Easter Egger)

Ok I’m shook about this one. I’ve been assuming pullet this whole time as there are no saddle feathers. 7ish months old now. Just watched her/him “mount” one of my older hens. (Didn’t look quite right and took way longer than usual). Then she/him did the “rooster dance” with one of my other...

Is there a way to breed BBW turkey?

I’ve never considered A.I. I would have to do a lot of research on doing that safely. I usually prefer the natural method lol

Is there a way to breed BBW turkey?

She’s 5 months old so not laying any eggs yet. She seems to be on the smaller size compared to other meat birds I’ve seen. I told my family member I would give her a good home so I feel too guilty to butcher her. I would rather make her useful and breed her somehow

Is there a way to breed BBW turkey?

We acquired a female BBW turkey from a family member who could no longer keep their birds. I understand a male BBW cannot breed as it will crush and kill the hen. Is it possible to breed her with a different type of turkey and have successful fertile eggs?

Can anyone identify breed and sex?

We are acquiring a turkey from a family member that is moving and can no longer keep their poultry flock. It was an accidental turkey that came with their chicken chicks a few months ago so they don’t know what it is. It is about 5 months old. I know absolutely nothing about turkeys so this will...

Opened incubator during hatching. Did I risk the entire hatch?

Update: a few more did hatch normally afterwards so it looks like I didn’t do too much harm. Still waiting on a bunch more. Today is actually only day 20. So hopefully we get many more over the next couple days.

Opened incubator during hatching. Did I risk the entire hatch?

That makes me fill better. Humidity bounced back to 75% very quickly. Just scared me half to death when the little think was panicking under there and peeping at the top of its lungs

Opened incubator during hatching. Did I risk the entire hatch?

Long story short: there is a platform in my incubator with the fan underneeath. Eggs stay on top of the platform. Somehow one chick finagled it’s way under the platform and put itself in danger of getting injured by the fan. I quickly threw some moist paper towel in the incubator while I hastily...

Day 23. No pips. Is hope lost?

I candled everyone when I got home tonight. It is now clear that most of them quit pretty early on. Probably around day 10ish. But there are a few left that are definitely full term and I can still see all the blood vessels alive and attached. I will give these a couple more days until day 25...

Day 23. No pips. Is hope lost?

the eggs are from our Backyard flock. Definitely fertile. Stored in a cool dry basement for 3-5 days before setting. I set them on March 17, 2020 around 11pm. I’m starting to think the temp has been low and I didn’t know it. I’ve only been using the thermostat on the incubator. I just put a...

Day 23. No pips. Is hope lost?

I’m sorry 55 was a typo. I did mean to type 45 for the first 18 days. The air cell on the egg I candled today did look to be a pretty decent size.

Day 23. No pips. Is hope lost?

I have an OppsDecor automatic incubator with egg turner. This is my first time ever trying to hatch chicks. They came from our own backyard flock so I know they are fertilized. Most of them are Easter eggers (which I find very difficult to candle) and a few barnyard mixes. 22 eggs total were...

    Selling chicks in RI

I have been searching the RI DEM agriculture website all day and have come up with no answers. I want to start selling day old chicks but I want to make sure I am not doing so illegally. As far as I know NPIP certification is voluntary in my state. I cannot find any other certifications or laws...

Guard Goose - Yay or Nay?

It would not be for nighttime protection as everybody gets locked up at night. Just some daytime free ranging protection. I worry less about hawks as we live in a very wooded area. Not a lot of open space for hawks to see clearly.

Guard Goose - Yay or Nay?

Looking into adding a guard goose to my small flock of 12 chickens. We live in a very secluded area with lots of wildlife. My chickens free range only when I’m home to watch them. I would like them to have more freedom so possibly looking to get a guard goose. Any insight on whether it’s worth...

    Pale comb

She is about the same. I dewormed her. Dusted for mites (just in case). And started putting Rooster Booster in their water in case she is just having a hard time molting this year. Her comb looks to have a tiny bit more color but not much. I still catch her napping in odd places. Still eating...

    syringe question

Try your local vet. I work at a veterinary office and have had people walk in and ask if we could spare some 1ml syringes for their birds. We usually just give a couple out because they come free with most of our liquid medications.
