Getting day olds in a few weeks...

This may be a silly question, but I'm getting some day old's in 2 weeks. I have a very tame and friendly Buff Orphington hen, she's about 8 months old, never been broody. What would happen if I put her in the brooder with the day olds? Would she hurt them or begin to mother them? Honey as...

BO 2 weeks old suddenly can't stand

This chick is 2 weeks old tomorrow, she came with others from Cackle Hatchery, all seem to be doing well, until today when I noticed the hen in a corner with her head down. If I put my hand in the brooder box they all scatter and she moved then, later in the day she stayed put. Brought her in...

Probably a silly question from a newbie

Thanks so much... that's right (10th grade biology!). I guess I still have memories of being a child and getting a few eggs that had blood in them, and was told that was a baby chic starting. I was 6-7, so I really don't have a clear memory of it, but it's stayed with me for 30 years...

    My own feed?

I've read a lot on here that it's best to just go with the bagged feed for consistency and minerals. I'm in the odd field of raising heritage grains for bakeries and whiskey distillers, so I have a lot of different grain available that many don't. I have red corn, bloody butcher, blue, Hopi...

    Scratch Grains @ 12 wks ?

I'm far from an expert, but I have a grain farm, so mine get lots of grain thrown in the run, from as early as 3 weeks they were eating whole kernel corn, heritage types, red and blue corn, not junk yellow GMO corn. Take that for what it's worth.

Probably a silly question from a newbie

I got my first little flock of 6 chickens this spring from Rural King, leghorns... didn't work out so well, but they are about 8 weeks and have been living at the farm in a large fenced area for about 3 weeks now. They started roosting on the little coop I threw together for them, then I put a...

    What is she?

I tried to post this picture last week, but no success, so here she is from the desktop. She came from Rural King, supposedly a "rainbow", that was my first stab at buying chickens. I got 5 leghorns as well that day and this girl is at least twice as big as those mean things. Rainbow as she's...

What type of hen is this?

She came from Rural King, labeled a "rainbow", not friendly, but in with like aged white leghorns... probably explains it.

Long time farmer, new with chickens

The place with the buff Orpington seems like a privately owned fed store, they have supplies etc, hatching days listed, but no website that I can find, just the Craigslist ad. Then I think to just order day olds and go that way, I can ignore the quarantine period since they are from a large...

Long time farmer, new with chickens

Great website! I was raised on the farm but had little to no livestock, but did have a pet chicken someone dropped off, and she was a good friend. My daughter's are 5&8 and have wanted chickens/ducks, this year I gave in. We got two ducks at tractor supply, they are mascovy not Pekin not sure...
