Pumpkin! Last year I waited until after Halloween and collected orphan pumpkins from friends and a few free ones from Safeway. This year I did not wait and bought one for them yesterday. After a day of walking around it and trying to figure out how to get in (they seemed to know it was for them)...
My chickens have made a common nest from straw in the chicken run and about half of the twelve hens are laying their eggs there. I am wondering if they resent my taking their eggs. I put a dozen weighted easter eggs in their nesting boxes with differing amounts in each box so they will still...
Looks just like my RIR hen. I'd wait. Does he/she have spurs? My hens can all be very noisy, especially after they have laid an egg - they like to strut about and brag.
Thanks for your responses.....I think I will let them out unless it is a soaking downpour or if thunder and lightning are present. I usually leave the doors to the coop and run open anyway so the girls can go back to lay their eggs. They have been real good about not laying eggs other than in...
Do you let your chickens free range in the rain. I am in Washington. The weather is in the low to mid 40's now. The chickens really like to get out into the yard when I let them. I hesitate to let them out of the run in the rain since they don't seem smart enough to keep themselves dry. Does it...
DO NOT USE CEDAR SHAVINGS!!!
The odor from the cedar (which many of us love) will hurt your chickens.
Pine shavings are great - just not free.
Be careful if you are using shavings and sawdust from a workshop - avoid cedar.
Hope this helps.
I have chickens for the first time. I want to plant a vegetable garden in my backyard which is shared by my free ranging chickens. Gardeners - what are you doing to co-mingle chickens and gardening?
I did not know about quarantining chickens when I introduced new ones to the flock. What I did was put the new chicken in a dog kennel and put the kennel in the coop at night. In the morning the established girls (11) would stand arround the kennel looking in and wondering what was going on. I...
I got my six ee's from mypetchicken.com last June. One lays an olive (almost military) green egg. One lays a light robin egg blue, one lays a pink egg, one lays a cream (almost white) egg and two lay bluish green eggs. Sizes are med to large and seem to be getting larger as they mature.
I am in Lakewood, Washington. (Yes - the one in the news for losing our police officers.) I have twelve chickens that were hatched last June. Six are easter eggers and at least three of them are laying green eggs. One is laying a pink egg. Two are black sex-link, one is red sex-link, two are...
I am in Lakewood, Washington (south of Tacoma/Seattle). Raising 12 chickens on 1 1/4 acre. Our city allows 16/acre but that includes ducks, rabbits, etc. Total 1/acre. Based on that, I can have 20 but am very happy with my 12. Just hens and just getting started.
There is a guy out in the county who is raising chickens in a large camping tent. He is using saw horses for roosts and recycling bins for nesting boxes. I understand this is a temporary plan for him but he's been doing it for a while. He has some basic wire fencing for a run. Not super predator...
I adopted a rogue chicken that was hanging out in a friend's yard. It looks like the 2 standard barred that I have in my flock. It does not crow but it seems quite large and it's comb is bright red. It's comb seems a little large for a hen and small for a rooster. It does not crow but is...
