I may be wrong but I carefully break the membrane to let oxygen in. Since the small end doesn’t have the pocket of air that the big does.
That air, from my understanding, is for the chick to transition to oxygen and rest to built up strength for piping.

Sorry to say, but I sent feathers to Avion Biotech and they sent back that he is a male. His Peacock and hen were given to me last summer.
