When can my broody hen be loose in the coop/run with her chicks?

I am also letting a mama raise a couple of chicks. She has been so awesome at it. My coop is also off the ground, but they caught on quickly! They are very independent now. I brought them home on May 1st, and tucked them under my Broody. I sat on a stool in the coop for a while and just...

Comment by 'greenpalm' in article 'A Well Insulated Chicken Coop'

How's it going now? It's been a couple of years did it all work out as you expected? I found your page while considering my options for adding some insulation to an existing coop in Texas. We're in for a cold night. Tonight I threw a couple of old blankets over the bedroom and I hope it'll do...

    First Egg Countdown

We got our first egg today! 21 weeks to the day after we brought the chicks home. The egg weighed 40 g. We think it's the most beautiful egg we've ever seen. ETA: She laid it right in the nesting box just where she was supposed to! Sweet smart girl!

We have Fleas - the only thing new around here is our chickens.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/343794/advantage-flea-control-for-cats According to this thread (which admittedly, I dredged up from 2010) Advantage isn't absorbed systemically and the eggs are still safe. Quote: Quote: Obviously, this is old… and it's one poster's opinion… but...

It would be a big bummer if we couldn't even eat our first egg

We have Fleas - the only thing new around here is our chickens.

Thanks so much for the reply. That thread you linked is one of the ones I read. My chicks aren't laying yet anyway. We only got them on 5 May. So if I did treat them with the Advantage, how long would I have to wait before the eggs (if they did start laying) were safe? Also, if I used...

We have Fleas - the only thing new around here is our chickens.

We have lived here for 14 years and have no indoor pets. We got five chicks in May. We have all hardwood floors, and just a few area rugs. We have all our mattresses sealed in bedbug proof zip cases. We have regular quarterly pest control treatment and have had for the entire 14 years we've...

How far away/close should I place feeders and how many feeders do 5 hens need?

I have a pretty large backyard, (the whole lot is 150' x 66' but of course my house is on it and they only have the back yard) and my 5, 10-week-old pullets are out on their own most of the day now. I've gradually given them more and more foraging area and less and less supervision, and we...

Did my chickens BRING the chiggers with them? Itch itch itch…

I've searched through the old threads and read the various and sundry advice and home remedies, I've looked all over the 'net for how to get rid of them, but my curiosity is about why they're here. We've never had chiggers in our suburban neighborhood yard until this summer, and this is the...

Breeding pens from dog exercise pens

I was thinking about getting a dog exercise pen like that to let mine browse around the yard in different areas. I'm glad to know others are trying this. We have a lot of shade so I was thinking of just clipping bird net over the top.

A Visiting Chicken in my yard. Please help me!

It took me several years, but I did finally get some hens! I have 5, 5-week-olds 3 are production reds, and 2 are barred rocks. Anyway, our roo from this thread is still living on the ranch out in Bailey and doing fine. We went out to visit him about a year ago. We bought a hedgehog from his...

A Visiting Chicken in my yard. Please help me!

Good news. I do have someone coming to get him. She has a small ranch in Bailey. She has chickens and recently lost a rooster, so he will be going to a good home. She is a friend of a friend. There is no way I could try to "sneak" him to stay. Unfortunately, I've already had legal trouble...

A Visiting Chicken in my yard. Please help me!

It's pouring rain and he is just sitting out there in it. I put a box on top of a table, and I also opened the garage door. I guess he doesn't have the sense to get in out of the rain. Poor thing. He's going to be "madder than a wet hen!" Julie

He is pretty, isn't he? Aw, shucks, I wish he could stay. It's really been fun having him visit. We'll have to take him somewhere where we can go and see him. I have a friend who has pheasants. I'm going to call her. My dad didn't want him. Julie
