    INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

the only thing we don't like about them being in the garden is they keep eating all our strawberries, nibbling on our zucchini, snatching all our grapes. lol They are great for bug control... and I love them around our compost and our garden... but not when they are eating all our stuff!

    INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quote: Our chicken coop door, (which is also on a timer-opens at dawn and closes at dusk) multiple motion sensor lights, All of the lighting inside of our coop, a ventilation fan, (because we only have 3 windows which are on the smaller side. Although we do open the larger barn style doors a...

    Slug Control

I'm looking at some on Amazon right now and they say they also deter mice and rats. We have tons of those too that come in from the surrounding field... Wondering if I can put them around the coop to keep the mice away. I'll let you know how they work!

    Slug Control

You are right, I forgot to mention pre 1982 pennies for the best results. I had also heard soaking them in coca-cola to clean them before hand is best, for some reason. I did this, and the pennies cleaned up very well. I hadn't heard of the solar powered rodent deterrents until now. I must...

    INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I may have to add another 6-8". That's a good idea. We specifically got 6' tall fence in hopes that it'd be tall enough that they wouldn't easily just fly over. We were wrong! Our Golden Sebright Bantam is very light! (This is the first of this breed that we have owned. But we read full grown...

    INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I agree, Try the cardboard, you'll be so glad you did! We use is it in all our Gardens. I also refuse to use any pesticides or weed killers. This year we put up several raised garden beds(along with our regular garden which is about a half acre)... put cardboard down where the grass was, built...

    surprise chicks

I'll be the first to say I'm not that good at telling when they are that young...but the second set of pictures looks just like our EE's did when they were that tiny. Pretty chicks you acquired!

    Free range chickens coop setup

I think your set up looks great. We put ceramic eggs in our nesting boxes when we first saw them attempting to nest outside while free ranging and it worked. Ours have only been laying for a few weeks now, but so far they are all laying in the nesting boxes and not outside. You can put as much...

    Chicken Help!!!

I agree^...They need some chicken feed to make sure they are getting the nutrients they need. There's recipes to make your own, which would still be better than no chicken feed at all. We get 80 pound bags of Organic, Non-Gmo feed from a feed mill close by for $12.59 a bag. You can still give...

2 roosters..one crows all day, one not at all. Why?

Ahhh, I had wondered if that could have anything to do with the fact that one of our neighbors has 15 hens and no roosters. We've had a couple of their hens come over to our property...one in which they had us keep because she would come right back as soon as they took her back home. Maybe our...

2 roosters..one crows all day, one not at all. Why?

We have 19 chickens. 2 of them are roosters. Both about 20 weeks old. One a Black Australorp the other a Rhode Island Red. The Australorp is the dominant rooster and he crows ALLLLLL day. From sun up to sun down...and I wouldn' t be surprised a bit if he's in the coop crowing all night long. The...

    Slug Control

This might sound silly but I've read a lot about putting pennies in a garden to help with slug control. I can't tell you why, but apparently it dieters them. My mom has a massive garden in KY and there are huge slugs there. For a few years now she has been buying bowling balls from flea...

    OMG, She's laying an egg!!!

How exciting! Depending on the breed you may have an egg soon. Be patient although that's easier said than done. Our isa browns started laying between 16-18 weeks. After the very first egg from one of our hens she waited 5 days before laying her second egg. I was out there constantly like "come...

    Crooked beak

And I forgot... which I assume you know since you said he won't be used for breeding... it's generally genetic so any chicks from him may also have scissor beak.

    Crooked beak

We have 2 EE's, one has scissor beak. Most important thing is make sure it can still eat/drink okay. Its best that the food is raised up so it doesn't have much distance to pick the food up in their beak and raise their head...because with doing so if the food is closer to the ground they will...

    thoughts on Australorps?

We have two Australorps which are very calm and sweet. I take that back.... ONE is very calm and sweet. The other is a rooster and well, he's a jerk...but he's going thru rooster puberity... (yes, I'm trying to justify why he's a jerk in hopes that he will calm down soon....and in hopes that my...

    Newbies from Indiana!

Hi, we're somewhat new here. Somewhat as in, been reading and learning for months but finally decided to become a member today :) A little about us: We live on 15 acres in Indiana, have 5 kiddos, one dog, 5 outside cats...and our spoiled, super loved flock of 17 hens and 2 roosters. We have 9...

    Yes or No to DE

We use DE and love the benefits of it. We were very skeptical at first for the fact that it says you need to wear a respirator. So we had done a lot of research and asked a lot of questions... the only reason why a respirator is needed is because it's such a fine powder it's not good for your...
