Several show quality Black and Splash Andalusian cockerels - Black and Splash only color but if you are willing to wait and breed them they should produce show quality Blues. Why is she dead, I'm heartbroken

You didn't fail her at all and don't even think that! As someone who keeps chickens and other livestock for a part of my income, yes get attached and take great care, but at the end of the day, the circle of life goes on......and be prepared for that.

Vetropolycin for eye infection - anyone used it?

My rooster has a swollen eyelid I have Vetropolycin (bacitracin-neomycin-ploymixin) on hand that I use when the horses get goopy eyes. Has anyone any advice on whether I can use it on my roo? Couldn't find much on Google and I'm worried about the "cat + aspirin = liver failure" type of issue...

    Delawares wanted

I have a pullet and cockerel about 9 weeks old for free. Got them as "friends" for a bad Lakenvelder hatch where only one hatched and needed friends. They are out with the big chicks, free ranging now and very friendly b/c I handled them a lot when they lived in my dining room :-) I'm in...

I have a couple of well bred black Andalusian cockerels - about 16 weeks old now. They are from a new show bloodline and will be a great addition to any heritage breeding program. My main Andalusian rooster is the best - not aggressive with people, takes great care of his hens and very smart...

~8 week old savagely pecked by other chickens

Joel, I'm sorry but no way does that "barrel' look big enough for 5 chickens. Even bantams. It doesn't look like a good idea for any chickens to me. I've never had such a thing happen to my chicks, but when I've had minor pecking problems the thing to do is stop the appearance of red blood...

    Solar power fans?

PS - Not sure if this makes any difference to your suggestions, but my chickens all free range during the day. I open the chicken house door in the morning and they all rush out (about 45 of them now, but 15 more in the brooder). They go roaming around the farm and in some woods behind the barn...

    Solar power fans?

Thanks everyone - that is a lot of food for thought! I really appreciate all the ideas and suggestions I will have to do some research! The BYC board is fantastic! When I mentioned about the chicken house not being structurally designed for more natural ventilation, actually it would be fine...

    Miracle Chick!

Great story! The only singleton chicks I've ever raised have turned out nasty. I'd recommend you ask around and see if you can find a couple of similar aged chicks. I have one poor Lakennvelder pullet who was the only one to hatch, got two Delawares to keep her company, put them out in the...

Do you have a light in your coop? Why or why not?

I just asked DH for solar powered lights for my birthday :-) One will be a motion sensor light for the outside that I want for the winter when I m fumbling around in the dark to even get to the chicken house, the other is a shed light that I can switch on when I am inside the chicken house...
