    Rats, rats EVERYWHERE! ☹️

My rats disappeared when my shrews moved in. I leave the little guys alone, chickens kill one every so often, but other than that they are my little watch dogs. Very territorial and venomous. I was using plaster of Paris doughballs with some success, prior to the shrews arrival.

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Chicken missing feathers; sick or bullied?

I do have a bird that really has trouble with the molt as far as not eating. I make her scrambled eggs at least once a day for about a week and then she is back to normal. (or hard boiled and mashed up so they don't look like an egg)

Chicken missing feathers; sick or bullied?

I have feathers in my run, my yard, my house, at work lol.

Chicken missing feathers; sick or bullied?

Say molting here also.... I have 10 in molt right now, feathers everywhere lol. I usually bump up protein with a little grower mix in their mash and some mealworm or black army worms as treats. My one girl used to molt in January. I live in the Great Lakes region, so it gets cold. She's...

Will a 5 strand electric fence keep out foxes?

I believe that I also read somewhere a red fox could clear a 6 foot fence, but they definitely like to dig in my experience. I peel back the sod the bottom of my run (on the outside of the fence) and put down about a foot or two of concrete wire, then cover it back up with the sod. A bit of...

    Raccoon Apocalypse

I just posted in another thread about these a-holes. I shot 16 in 2018, 8 in 2019, and haven't seen any yet this year. I'm fortunate to be living in a neighborhood where almost no one has be part of it for less than 30 years. We did get new neighbors two years ago, but they are adapting...

Putting your chickens a sleep at dusk

My girls go in as soon as the automatic barn light kicks on at dusk. If they see me outside some will come back out, but as soon as I go into the coop they follow. During winter I generally give them a snack of scratch/meal worm/black oil sunflower mix, inside the coop, just for some extra...

Predator took all 5 hens last night! I feel horrible!

Sorry for your loss. Looks like some sort of canine incursion to me also. A fox teaching her kits to hunt, coyotes... Domestic dogs generally kill for sport and leave behind their victims. I've had problems with raccoons (which also leave behind victims). I killed 16 of them in 2018, 8 in...

    Is his healthy poop?

Nothing surprising to me. The firmness and volume of it depends on what my birds are eating and how much grit they intake. Once they start laying wait til you see some of the piles you'll get 😲. Sometimes I think there is a little dog hiding in my coop somewhere.

    Egg Bound?

Just about 1 hour ago she squatted down and laid an egg in the driveway, right in front of me, like she was proving a point lol. Looks like she'll be OK for now. She is the runt and I've never had good luck with the runts tho. Hopefully she breaks that chain.

    Bitten by my chicken

Sounds like a chicken coup. I'd keep an eye on 'em. They have all day to plot against humans while hanging out. It only takes one to start a revolution. :D I have to wear long sleeves and pants otherwise they attack my tattoos. I have one now that growls and hisses if you get near her when...

    Hard molt?

Some of my birds are getting older and the molt gets tough on them. Sometimes they won't eat. I found hard boiling eggs and mashing them up seems to stimulate them. You said that your girl is eating, but I noticed my girls devour the egg crumbles no matter what. I also use the meat bird feed...

    Egg Bound?

Well, she seems fine now. Tail is all fanned out when she is walking, her appetite is back, and very social. I let her out this afternoon because she was restless and missing the other girls. It was a nice sunny, warm day here so I didn't want her to miss it if she was not going to make it...

    Egg Bound?

Last night her tail was down and she was just laying around, not talking or anything. I flushed her vent with the warm water, epsom, and olive oil. She had a couple good bowel movements this morning and her tail is up, she's talking, and eating and drinking. I took a vacation day so I can...

    Egg Bound?

I have a 7 month old blackstar that was waddling around and sitting a lot last night. I thought she was egg bound. I checked with a lubed, gloved finger and could feel the end of an egg. Anyhow, I brought her into the house and put her in the the spare bathroom's walk in shower. I gave her a...

All my sweet birds are gone. What to do?

I'm sorry for your loss. I agree with Sea Wolf. Dogs behave how they are raised. If they are raised by a-holes, they become a-holes. That's the sad part of it all. Chances are, if animal control does get off of their arses and do their job, the dogs will go to a shelter, won't be able to be...

    Swollen Eyes

Both eyes were open this morning and she was trying to peck every passerby on the lower roost. She wasn't very receptive to ointment last night or this morning but my laughing probably bumped up the difficultly level a bit. This evening she didn't really fight it. She let put the ointment in...

    Swollen Eyes

I've been checking out other threads about swollen eyes, but my girl still has me scratching my head. Friday evening I noticed a little foam in the corner of her eye. I thought maybe she had been pecked or had some other irritant in it. Saturday back to normal. Sunday normal. This morning...
