    Eggs earlier than usual

I just got my first egg of the season earlier this week. This is about a month and a half earlier than usual -- generally I get the first eggs during the first week in March. What's going on? I don't have new chickens -- they are at least 3 years old, some as old as 6 years. I've changed nothing...

    End of Life Behaviors

Okay, here's an update. We irrigated Rockette's wounds again and only saw one maggot that we removed. The wounds look surprisingly better today. After irrigating them we sprayed them with Vetericyn Plus and we got Screw Worm Ear Tick Aerosol to help control the flies. Rockette is still separated...

Thank you! We do have vaseline and will apply that tomorrow. No, I don't think the wound has breeched the abdominal cavity, but then again, I don't know exactly what I'm looking at. It's about the size of a quarter and another smaller one, a bit smaller than a dime. But both have edges that...

    End of Life Behaviors

I inspected them more closely earlier and determined from looking at pictures that they were maggots. Tons of them. Spent the afternoon irrigating the wound and picking them out one by one. We think we got them all but the wound, while as clean as we can get it, is quite deep. She is separated...

    End of Life Behaviors

I was out of town until last night and I just now verified Rockette has worms -- actually saw them as she had her back to the open nesting box and I saw them near her vent. I'll look at the other chickens but am going to assume everyone has them! Everything is closed today but I will go tomorrow...

    End of Life Behaviors

No, I've not dewormed my flock. I will check into that. The hen that died was of normal weight -- she looked healthy, although I noticed her crop was not standing up as straight as normal in the last couple of days. No other symptoms (respiratory or unusual droppings). Other than the symptoms I...

    End of Life Behaviors

I recently had my #1 chicken, MammaSan, die. She was almost 6 years old -- a Black Sex Link -- and a very prolific egg layer. A week or two prior to finding her dead I noticed she was moving more slowly and she started seeming "spacey" when I'd return the chickens back into the coup after being...

I've used it for years. Never had a problem with my chickens.

Comment by 'flock mommasan' in article 'Managing Manure: What to do with all the poo'

Learned a lesson this year -- I put what I thought was fairly composted chicken manure around some of my plants. Did not mix it in, just sprinkled it on top (lord, what was I thinking??!). Well, guess what, it wasn't composted enough. Everything had beautiful green growth (lots of nitrogen...

    Molting and odd behavior

Just as a follow up -- after a day or two of odd behavior (walking crooked, for example), Rockette is now "fully clothed" and back to her plucky self. I suspect that major molt must have been painful and she was doing her best to get through it!

If you could only keep 3-5 chickens

If you want a steady supply of eggs, I'll put a word in for a Black Sexlink. She pretty much produces large brown eggs all year long (with a brief vacation to molt). I think my girl, Mommasan (aka Big Mama) is beautiful! She's black with beautiful iridescent feathers. I like to paint and I'm...

    Molting and odd behavior

I suppose there's really nothing I can do right now but wait and see? I'm heartened that she is continuing to eat and drink.

    Molting and odd behavior

My little Rockette -- #2 on the pecking order -- is molting quite badly right now. I wasn't that concerned but now she's acting oddly. She seems to be walking sideways with her head cocked part of the time. Is it that she feels badly with all the feathers going and coming? Or is this something...

Thanks for the info. I'm enjoying watching and learning about our new rooster. This will help us interact with him better and be more aware of what he's doing and why. Thank you!

    Help - egg bound?

The next day the chick was straining a bit, but she successfully delivered a regular fully hardened egg. She's had no problems since then and seems fine. I'm super relieved! I think the warm water did relax her enough to push the whole thing out. I wasn't sure if she would have problems after...

    Help - egg bound?

Well, my husband was able to gently squeeze and the [soft] egg came out. He put the "innards" back in. We'll watch her tomorrow and hope it doesn't happen again. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate the feedback. A neighbor suggested giving antibiotics (which he has). Is that necessary...

    Help - egg bound?

One of my new chickens (~5 months old) was straining. Now she has a red bulge out her vent. It looks like it contains a partially hardened egg. I can see about a 1" portion of it and it feels pretty soft. What do I do?? She was pooping before the bulge came out -- that's why I noticed because it...

    Hen pecking me

Most the time that's what I do, but Ruby's pecks have been a little more aggressive so I wondered if I shouldn't be doing something else.

    Hen pecking me

Good to know! I'd really like to keep Daffy if he behaves himself and -- the neighbors don't complain too much!;)
