    Spoiled Coturnix Quail Set-up

Alas, it has been months since I posted, and lots of developments have gone underway since then. Without any more hesitation, I present my quail babies (they're not really babies, just my babies) new setup: They all didn't know what to do when they first saw their new home. Pretty soon they...

Will this work as Hatcher / Brooder???

I have plenty of cages. I assumed it better to keep them together while young. Also, I plan on keeping only one male and a couple hens. The rest will be culled.

Will this work as Hatcher / Brooder???

Update on chicks!!! - Here we are today, still a healthy and thriving 7! I have to clean their entire cage every day to every other day, but they get fresh food and clean water always everyday. The automatic waterer always keeps water in the bowl for them though. They love the bedding and...

Will this work as Hatcher / Brooder???

Yes a healthy 7 so far!!! I could not have asked for a better outcome, I am soo happy :) I used incandescent blacklight reptile bulb. It pretty much produces no light and just heat. They seem to love it :)

Will this work as Hatcher / Brooder???

So far everything is very interesting to watch! Over half of the eggs have pipped! Some have larger longer pips as well and I expect a chick should pop out soon!

Will this work as Hatcher / Brooder???

Will the eggs actually more clearly bobble as time passes in lock down? Is lack of movement in an egg after lockdown and before hatching bad? When might I be able to hear them chirp in the eggs? They are Coturnix so 17-18 days of incubation is usually required or so I've read.

Will this work as Hatcher / Brooder???

Thanks everyone for the great help! :) This afternoon marked day 14 and the itty bitty quail eggs have been taken from the egg turner and placed on a towel in the incubator at 45 - 65 % humidity. I swear I've already seen a slight wiggling egg, but then again that's probably just me getting over...

    Homemade Incubator experiment

The idea is theoretically workable. I would just make sure the material that you use for piping doesn't get hot to the touch. If a bird was pushed ito something like that and not able to get away, it could smell really bad and lets never forget about what the poor birdy would feel. But, if the...

Will this work as Hatcher / Brooder???

So today I installed the heat lamp. Directly under it is about 97°. I think the screen cover should be alright for a moment. 4 days to go until lockdown :) Also can anyone else recommend this food for quail? :

Will this work as Hatcher / Brooder???

Wow thankyou for this info I definitely want to try to make something that substitutes/passes as momma hen for comfort. I've seen some really cool ideas on those, including yours.

Will this work as Hatcher / Brooder???

Relax. I know the bulb that I'm supposed to get that wont cook them alive(I've measured). And I wasn't talking about just going out and purchasing any red light bulb. I've purchased them before for my other animals that need a basking light- I may have never had chicks but the heat lamp I am...

    Eggs hatching with low humidity

You should keep the chick in the incubator for 24 plus more hours. Until the chick is puffy, fuzzy, dry and warm, it will not do good at all outside the incubator. It will not harm the other eggs, please I implore you! Unless the tank you are putting them in has a warm end of 95° and a cool end...

    Eggs hatching with low humidity

BE VERY CAREFUL WITH ASSISTING. You can just as easily kill the chick by prematurely opening it or damaging the inner membrane and causing it to bleed. If you absolutely must do that, read up on it lots. Is the egg pipping (the term for cracking;hatching) inside where the air sac would be? It...
