THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

Got my first egg (with a hard shell) on Sunday 10/1, and egg number 2 on Tuesday. :ya Thes were from my speckled sussex, she just turned 20 weeks. The egg on the left is egg 2, the smaller one on the right is the first one.

Sexing Speckled Sussex - (1st time mom's observations) pic intensive

KikisGirls, SueT, Drumstick Diva :) Just a follow up at 19 weeks, she laid her first egg. It's a soft shell, as I haven't switched the feed over yet to layer feed (I have a couple of youngsters turning 18 weeks in another week). But here it is, the proof in the pudding if you will. This is the...

Sexing Speckled Sussex - (1st time mom's observations) pic intensive

Hi Sue T, she's doing great! She's going to be 15 wks if I remember right. I need to get a better pic, she's lightening fast. Her comb is still pale and no waddles. Probably around mid/late September when she will start laying

    SS boy or girl?

I was trying to see the comb - what I do see makes me think pullet. It's the same age as mine and looks just like mine and mine is definitely a pullet :) Comb looks pale, not red. Please keep us posted :)

Sexing Speckled Sussex - (1st time mom's observations) pic intensive

According to a 99.99% accurate DNA blood test, she's a pullet. But I guess the proof is in the pudding so in a couple of months when she lays her first egg, I'll post bac. Unless of course she in the.01% margin of error and crows - and I'll post for that as well.

    SS boy or girl?

Renn, do you still have your SS? I was in the same situation- ppl all said cockerel based on a pic. But I just had mine DNA tested (long story, but I had 2 chicks I thought were Roos and I had a $40 scratch lottery winner so thought what the heck) so on the 2 I thought were Roos, both came back...

Sexing Speckled Sussex - (1st time mom's observations) pic intensive

She is going to be 11 weeks old come Sunday. And yup, a lot of pink and a lot of comb. I would have said rooster, and always suspected until the last few weeks. I actually did a blood DNA test with DDC Veterinary, and the results are female. I read the certificate no less than 20 times. So she's...

Newbie Question on adding chicks into a brooder a week apart

So if I made a second brooder area, like those puppy play pens, and pet them next to each other that they can see each other as opposed to isolating 2 groups and then reintroducing them when they go out to the big coop - would that work??
