    Consistently broody chicken

Need some advice. I have a Buff Orpington that is 15 months old she is one of a flock of 6 hens. She started getting broody around 6 or 7 months old. I took all the advice here and put her in broody prison, she was in for about 4 days and signs were gone so back with the flock she went. About 5...

1 hen in flock has diarrhea.

Just to update everyone. Fecal tests came back negative. Took samples from 3 of the 6 hens and all were clear. Like posted earlier I gave the flock some yogurt to see if that would help with the diarrhea, it appeared to help. The next day noticed more poop on the backside of the same hen so I...

1 hen in flock has diarrhea.

Have not dewormed the flock. They are only 6 months old didnt think they needed it yet. Neighbor across the street is a vet tech. She said they can do a fecal test for worms so thats gonna happen in the next two days. Depending on the results will determine if I deworm. I have given them some...

1 hen in flock has diarrhea.

Crop feels fine. Food in it through the day full when she goes to roost and empty in the morning. I am going to have a fecal test done soon to rule out worms. As for the peptobismol how much should I give her? She is a 6 month old RIR. Thanks again for the help.

1 hen in flock has diarrhea.

I not sure if all her poops are this way. I noticed her butt was all sticky so we cleaned her butt that led me to think there is a problem. My other 5 hens are ok so I dont think its feed related but no ruling anything out. When I blow the pic up I see little white dots? Could tgose be worm...

1 hen in flock has diarrhea.

Thanks for the reply. I feed them fermented pellet feed. They have free choice to dry pellets and oyster shells. They free range for 2 to 3 hours a day. Will post pic when I get home from work.

    The stowaway brooder. (PIC Heavy)

Hello all, I have researched a lot in the forums and asked many questions so I could be prepared for our 6 chicks when they arrived the first week in May (except they came the first week in April so that put me in scramble mode). I have a plan for the coop/run and its construction will begin...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Debid, Thanks for the reply. Currently natural ligbt is not an option (moving them outside to my shed next week then they will have natural light). Light is going from 0 to 100 fhen 100 to 0 currently. Should I use a dimmer to mimick natural light cycle?

Is there such a thing as to big?

Tmarsh, Thanks for the clarity on sizing. I have plenty of room for coop and run it is me limiting the coop to 4x8 max. As for the run I can go bigger without a doubt but at some point I would like the chickens to be able to roam the back yard when someone is home. My concern is predators. We...

Is there such a thing as to big?

Tmarsh&Jack, Thank you for the replies. My main concern was the birds keeping warm in rhe larger coop without heat you guys answered that for me so 4x8 it is. So Im clear the 4x8 coop will support max 8 birds and those 8 birds should have minimum 80 sqft of outdoor space. As for the run under...

Is there such a thing as to big?

And I thought getting chickens was easy. A little background, I live in Illinois so we get a good mix of all four seasons. I am planing on building a elevated coop with a gable roof and leaving the eaves open and a ridge vent for passive ventilation. There will be windows that open for warm/hot...

    Hardware cloth vs expanded metal?

Hello all, We are in the planning process for our coop. Research has shown that 1/2" hardware cloth is the preferred product for openings on the coop and run. What are your thoughts on using 1/2" expanded metal as an alternative? I know cost wise expanded metal is more expensive than...

    Alternative to hardware cloth

Hello an TIA for any information offered. I am in the panning process of out coop. I see that the recommended material to use is 1/2'' hardware cloth for any openings. I have access to 1/2 expanded metal and was wondering if this would be an acceptable alternative? Here is a link for those...
