I'm sorry. It's really hard to lose our chickens. I still haven't finished the ramp hole or skirt...maybe this weekend. Guess I'll do some landscaping with those pavers.
I'm getting the prompt to add media, which I tried to do. Thanks for the tip on another d'uccle thread - was just happy to find this one! I just love the coloration, unlike any others that I have seen.
No good pointers here. I got Bantam and standard chicks at the same time so they are fine together. I have been letting them all out in the yard (with the 3 yo hens) together to get them used to each other. A few minor scrabbles but nothing serious. I do throw some scratch to divert the hens'...
I had to think through this concept, along with a couple more posts but I get it. The coop is close to cement so I can't go out very far - 12 on is pushing it. Thanks for the help!
Your coop is looking great! I am finishing up my coop addition, and at the point of deciding what kind of skirt to put in. I really appreciate all the input from experienced folks here. I have had a chicken bottom wire before but it rusted out. I am currently planning to put in a 15 in skirt...
I now have the 3 month old Polish in a cage with the 2 six week old Bantams, in the coop. They get along great! Real pleased.
Now if I could just find a place for the 3 Bantam cockerels - one Porcelain d'uccle, 1 mille de fleur d'uccle and 1 black Cochin with the frizzled gene...I put on...
Hi Karen - I think a buddy is a good idea. I had the Polish in the yard yesterday with my most easy going chick who started to peck her head again! So I put the cage in the coop anyway so at least she has some protection from the others. Really wanted to get out though. I ll try her with another...
I really like the idea of tree branches, but I haven't been able to find any that I think would be the right size. I don't mind scraping boards. I just want to scrub them about twice per year to get the crud down to the stains. I never found the roosts to emit ammonia though.
It's a little nerve wracking waiting for chicks to arrive. Thankfully it's warmer now so that is less of a factor. The post office here did NOT call me as soon as they arrived but I had gone there anyway in the morning before work. Could hear them chirping all over the warehouse! You would be...
My 11 week old polish was attacked by other (s) in the coop 2 days ago. Found it laying in a corner breathing hard. She had a lot of her head feathers pecked off and blood on the others, which are white. Some of it was scabbed over. She ate and drank a little the first night. Couldn't clean...
Thanks for all the information Ridgerunner and Hokum Coco! I have half of the new roost made of 2x4. I'm feeling my way through choosing tools but I'm cutting notches into the side supports so the roosting bars will slide into them. Want to be able to get it out of the coop when the boards get...
On a much different note...I came home and checked on my 11 week old chicks 2 days ago. There are 10 of them in the coop. The white crested black polish was laying in the corner. I pulled her out to find that some other chick (s) had pecked her head so badly that about 75% of her head feathers...
