Rooster Attack out of the blue!

I don't know how helpful this actually is but I was taught that a rooster takes certain 'cues' as signals of a challenge. Staring him directly in the eyes and holding the contact, especially while moving towards him and circling around him in his space can and will provoke some roosters to think...

    Destructive Chickens

I think on the egg eating issue lots of good advice has been offered, so I have a few suggestions for keeping the straw in the boxes, we used to struggle with this also. First, be sure the boxes have some sort of lip on the front, about 3 to 4 inches tall. Also if the boxes are fairly high off...

Opinions on lace winged chicks wanted

Personality and ease of handling and training are the reason I wanted more Ameraucana hens. I can call mine and her and my roo come running. They Did your chick start out that dark? It seems to be missing the striping down its back that my two have. Mine are already changing a bit in looks though.

    Unbelievable find in chicken droppings....

No, it was not digested at all. It still had eyes and I could still see the scales. I wish I knew how long it was inside him....

    Unbelievable find in chicken droppings....

YES! And it is the hens too, not just the rooster that kills.

    Do my chickens have worms?

Depending on where you live, the worms may have gotten in their waste after it was on the ground. I would maybe take a sample to your vet if you don't recognize the worm type. Most parasites that live inside your chickens do not exit with their feces, usually they are attached to the insides of...

    Unbelievable find in chicken droppings....

LoL, I don't know about impressed but something, ;) It is a snake! Completely whole, head to tail. I know of people saying their chickens will kill snakes in the coop but I didn't think they ate them.....

    Unbelievable find in chicken droppings....

So yesterday afternoon I stepped out the back door to throw something in the trash can and of course my mooches come running. When they see I didn't bring treats, they turn around and as they are walking away, my rooster stops and squirts a runny pile on the porch. So of course I lean over to...

    Hello from Texas!

Thanks! I figured we can't get worse odds than the 1 hen of 11, like our last batch. The worst part of rehoming the extra boys was that I quite liked a few of them and was then really picky about where they were going to end up, I didn't want anyone to eat them....

    Hello from Texas!

Thanks! Our last batch of 11 gave us one hen and 10 roosters, so I'm hoping for at least a few hens this time. We kept the hen and one rooster but we are trying to give them some friends :)

    Hello from Texas!

Thank you! If there are at least 2 or 3 that turn out to be hens, I'll be satisfied, regardless of breed. My last batch of 11 gave me one - yes 1 - hen and 10 roosters. We kept one rooster and the hen.

    Hello from Texas!

Hi all. I am in the Gulf Coast Area of southern Texas, we are about 30 miles in from the coast of Galveston. I have a pair of chickens - a Ameraucana rooster and a mixed hen (Rhode Island Red father, unknown mother). We recently got a batch of 5 day old pullets - they came from a lady who orders...

Opinions on lace winged chicks wanted

Thank you! Well I know that their final adult coloring and markings take awhile to get to but my concern was that they seem more brown than I would have thought. I'm hoping I wasn't given the variety of laced wings that are a red/brown with black. I just don't like brown chickens.... I'm sure...

Opinions on lace winged chicks wanted

Hello all. I got 5 day old chicks last week from a lady who mail orders them. I wanted half a dozen Ameraucanas but ended up with 2 Ameraucanas, 1 barred rock, and 2 others that were supposed to be silver laced Wyandottes. I've never had any Wyandottes, so I am not sure what they typically look...
