    Under the run

Hi all :frow So I've been dreaming about chickens for years, and am finally moving to a town that allows them! :celebrate I'm just now in the designing stage and could use some suggestions. We have a TON of predators. Our house is next to a cornfield and grain elevators so field mice are a huge...

That's good. Guess it's still a mystery then!

    Feeding quails..,

This is what I've read "Medicated feeds are just to much for these small quails bodies. Their livers can't process them properly. It may even be enough to cause infertility in adults once it has built up in their systems." So regular use is not recommend, but I have read of people using it for...

    Coturnix fertility issues

Are you feeding them medicated feed? I heard that can cause sterility in the males.

Does anyone give scratch grains or wild bird food to their quail?

If you would like the quail alive I wouldn't necessarily recommend giving them Ativan, they may not react well, it could kill them. There are several different types of live traps you could try, or maybe look for a nest on the ground and incubate your own. Lots of advice here on incubating eggs!

    Raising on the ground question

Ah, yes thank you! That's quite a large apron, I can definitely see how difficult it would be for a predator to figure that out. Thanks for the tip! :)

    Raising on the ground question

That's great news to hear that an apron works for you, it certainly sounds like the easiest route! I'm not seeing your picture though.

    Raising on the ground question

They sure are little pooping machines. I just built my first ever compost box just to have somewhere to dump it all, and I've only got 8 quail! Course now I'm in love with the little buggers and I've gone and ordered a dozen eggs to incubate. I sure would love to have a whole slew of them like...

    Raising on the ground question

A raised garden bed is smart! This little coop is just a little over 2'x3'. I have 8 young quails at the moment, but plan to cull at least three. Waiting to figure out who the boys are. I've got them in a reinforced rabbit hutch right now, and I'll probably still use it during the winter and...

    Chick feeder trick

Hi guys! I tried something new today and it turned out to be pretty nifty. Not sure if this exactly has been done, but here goes! If you have one of these little chick feeders: you can take a K-cup (also called a coffee pod?) Tear off the foil, dump out the coffee, and cut off the bottom of the...

    Raising on the ground question

So I've read a lot of posts and articles by people who like to keep their quails on the ground. It's more natural and they can scratch and dig, I love the idea. But the hubby won't let me erect a huge aviary so I bought a nice little A-frame portable coop similar to the one pictured. So here's...

What Age can Quail Start Eating Mealworms?

I get dried mealworms and just crunch them up so they don't look like toes anymore My babies love them, and it's probably good extra protein too.

    Four weeks and still chilly?

I have a batch of Coturnix quail chicks that were born March 3rd, and they should be old enough to be moving outside by now. But even though they are living indoors at a nice even 70°F they still cry without their heat lamp! And they huddle under the lamp too. Do they still need the heat or are...
