The chickens are eating the goat alive

Okay - here's a good one - and I cannot make this stuff up. The goat lays on the ground and has a little sore on her side. The chickens have discovered that goat meat is delicious and peck the sore until she is dripping blood. The goat does nothing to defend herself. She can never heal...

    Mating Issue

I got my first ducks last spring - 3 pekins. Turns out I have two males and one female. They are about 22 wks old now and since reaching maturity, one couple was leaving the 3rd male out - not letting him near the water and mildly running him off. So I thought I'd get him a mate. I brought her...

    At what age do you...

...start your ducks on pellets? and ...start them free-ranging during the day (completely free - no pen) Thanks!

    MORE newbie questions!

Okay - just got 3 Pekins that are about 4 weeks old. The weather is gorgeous here during the day (70's), but still going into the 40's at night. And I'm sure we'll be hit with some more cold weather. But these ducks are taking over my laundry room. So: • when can I put them out in a pen at...

Do ducks go to BED at night like chickens?

I swear I'll order a book and stop asking silly questions. But do they?

Could I use Yesterday's News Cat Litter for my ducklings?

I happen to have a bag. Do you think they would try to eat it? Recycled paper pellets http://www.yesterdaysnews.com/

    Newbie question - duck droppings

Is the consistency of duck poo supposed to be pretty loose? For instance, looser than chicken poop? This is my first attempt at duck rearing and I know that poop is a good indicator of some health issues. Just want to know what to look for. Thank you

    Hen curtsying and walking backwards

Hope someone knows what this is Otherwise healthy, 4 year old RIR has been walking with her head and chest to the ground. Also walks backwards. Seems neurological - not behavioral. She's starting to molt. Don't know if she's laying - probably not - only a coupe of them are at this point. He...

Is chicken poop stronger than super glue?

How do you all clean up a dirty hen bottom? I've soaked the hen's rear end in warm soapy water for 10 minutes and still can't get the poop off. I've cut the feathers off before (is that okay?) but I'd rather just clean 'em up. Ideas?

Interesting idea to replace sutures in surgery

I was reading another poultry forum and thought this was a great idea. Instead of sewing up a bird after they did a surgery they glued her up! They superglued the wound together...keeping in mind, not to glue yourself to the bird. I think also that my doctor used a sort of glue on a nose surgery...

    Growth on hen's comb

I've had two chickens on this farm die of Lymphoid Leukosis. Yesterday I noticed another sick hen. Depressed, lethargic, and I noticed a growth on her comb. I'm worried I will lose another to LL. The state vet said the last hen was full of internal tumors. Is it possible for tumors to grow...

Unbalanced. Wobbly. Weak. Neurological problems. Can't walk.

A lot of folks have been posting that their hen is unsteady or having trouble walking. No symptoms except unsteady (although mine had a bad case of mites or lice, but I believe this was opportunistic parasites), otherwise fine - living a long time this way and not laying.I had the same problem...

Mite/bug problems... Retreat? If so, when?

We had an outbreak of something - mites, I suspect. I have bites on me as well. I dosed everyone with a few drops of Eprinex pour-on, cleaned out the coop and sprayed everything with permethrin 10%. I saw no evidence of bugs at all, but my bites are gone now and the birds don't seem to be...

Mama hen pecking at her chicks and ready to move on

I think I may have waited too long to start introducing mama and her three chicks to the flock. They are almost 9 weeks old and are separated (but in view of) the rest of the flock. Today I put in a small run for them to start getting used to it outdoors (I free range) and mom was thrilled. I...
