    Molting - Broody

My broody hen's hatched about 2 weeks ago. Now she is losing all of her feathers. Is it normal for her to molt after sitting on the nest for so long or is this totally unrelated and she is just molting. BTW she is 2.5 years old and this is the FIRST time she has gone broody and the first time...

    See those tail feathers??

I know this is really early to ask BUT... Do you see those tail feathers? Look at the 3rd from left . Do you see them? The other chicks don't have tail feathers. Does that mean I might have a roo? It is so hard to get a picture of it because the feathers are black.

hen won't come out of nesting box

I have a 3 year old Black Australorp hen that has not come out of the nesting box all day. It is almost dark now and while the other hens are on the roost she is still in the nesting box. I can force her to come out and when I do she looks fine but a little frustrated with me for making her...

    Progress on new coop

We started with an old three sided shed that was on the property - my husband built it for storage about 5 years ago. The shed is 12 foot deep and 14 foot wide. We have added an additional 16 foot to the length. Making it a total of 28x14. We live in south Georgia and it does not get cold...

    Chicken tacos

I am sure everyone else has already figured this out long ago, but it is new to me so I thought someone else out there might want to try it too. Super Easy!! 3-4 chicken breast in crock pot and pour in a jar of salsa (any kind). Cook 4 or so hours until the chicken is easily shredded. Serve...

Husband and son have been outside all day building me a brooder for my new chicks. I have never raised chicks before. I have had chickens for years but I have always bought them when they were old enough to be outside right from the start. This year we have ordered 12 chicks that will be here...

Fall Garden- what are you planting?

I am running a few weeks late this year (no surprise there) I am just putting in the fall garden. I am growing georgia collards, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. What do you grow in your area? Here in the south seems like we can grow something all year -- gotta love those mild winters!

How long after the hen lays the egg is it good? If I bring it right in and put it in the fridge and do not wash off the bloom -- how long can I keep it before I use it?

Can it be as easy as just putting in a Roo?

Ok, I have never even had a rooster in with my girls. But, I am thinking about "borrowing" my father in law's roo. I don't know ANYTHING about this though. I would really like to just do it the old fashioned way... put the rooster in with the hens and let them set on their own eggs. Is that...

I built my coop for FREE

I really love looking at all of the coops that are on here. I wish that I had the money to invest into my coop that I have seen others invest into theirs. I built my coop for FREE using only things that we had around the house, found or snagged from a relatives house. I don't think it is...
