Sudden illness or death in pullets - Madagascan periwinkle poisoning?

Update: I just performed a rough inspection of her cavity and identified a couple of things that seemed 'off': The crop was very full and almost the size of a tennis ball (mostly undigested cracked corn, which I give as a treat (not sure how she got that much in her), the gizzard was rock-hard...

Sudden illness or death in pullets - Madagascan periwinkle poisoning?

Hi All, 3 weeks ago I came home from a weekend away to find one of my Orpington pullets (26 weeks) dead in the coop. She was in top health (beautiful, big, show-quality bird) and there were no signs of a struggle. This morning, I found her sister in the same position. This chook was also in top...

    Sick or depressed?

Her 'regular' eggs often have a bloodspot, but I thought this was normal. Just a strange coincidence that both hens started experiencing major problems at the same time (despite different breeds/ages). I wish there was something I could do for her :(

    Sick or depressed?

Hi everyone, I recently lost my 5 year old silkie due to oviduct blockage. She was laying soft-shelled eggs and had 'solid material' in the oviduct. She was humanely euthanised last week. Now, my second egg-layer (3 year old French Marans) is looking very unwell. She was laying very small...

Silkie down and just laid a soft-shelled egg

Update: Took her to the vet today. Unfortunately, there was nothing they could do; she had a very swollen oviduct with some solid mass inside (probably broken eggs). The vet said this is quite common in older birds and couldn't say what the cause was. We had to put her down 😥 Rest in peace...

Silkie down and just laid a soft-shelled egg

Hi All, This morning I found my 5 year old silkie lying down inside the coop. I took her out, but she refused to stand. I placed her in a comfortable shaded spot with some pellets and water nearby. A few hours later, she produced a soft-shelled egg with a yolk. She is drinking and her head is...

Chicks raised by silkie refuse to roost

Hi All, My silkie hatched out 3 Orpington eggs and has been an excellent mum for the past 12 weeks, however, mum and chicks refuse to roost. The silkie has always preferred the box. I have one other chook (a bossy French Marans) who is happy to perch, but the silkie and the chicks all squeeze...

    French Marans Super Flyer

Thanks for the tips. The current fence she is scaling is a concrete rendered double brick wall. I will try the floppy wire idea. Failing that, does anyone know where I can get a miniature ball and chain? ;)

    French Marans Super Flyer

Hi All, I have a French Marans hen that keeps escaping from her enclosure. I clipped her wing according to instructions on this site, but she can still clear a 6 foot fence and even made a nest on top of the boundary brick wall! Are there any other tips for discouraging flying? Funny thing is...

    Introducing new silkie

Hi Everyone, One of our 2 little silkie sisters (the dominant one) died last week of unknown causes. Very sad. The other hen is fit and healthy (as confirmed by the vet), but looking a little lost and lonely. Just wondering if there are any special considerations for introducing a new...
