When should I stop feeding the starter feed??

You could either start giving them grower or layer crumbles (if you feedstore has the 16% in crumbles). I usually alternate between grower and scratch grains at this time to get them used to actual grains, but that's my personal feeding program based on how the birds are going to live later in...

    Got illegal chickens?

I though this thread was about fighting cocks I don't have any, but I had to dub the combs of my roosters due to frostbite and that's illegal around here. It's a stupid law. Was i supposed to just let the dead tissue fall off and have it look terrible? I suppose I could have taken them to a...

    Poo Poll

I really don't have problems with this. I replace the hay in the boxes often and hose them out once a week. I usually don't have to pick it out by hand.

    New Mexico

Quote: Edgewood is about 45 minutes east of Albuquerque. I lived there once for 2 months. Couldn't take anymore. I think you can find dates on Craigslist for Albuquerque under farm and garden occasionally. I lived there for two months once too, and it was MISERABLE! Don't know how anyone...

Roo driving hens out of the flock.

I had this problem last year. The roo was picky. his counterpart was killed defending his hens. There were two free range flocks. after the death of Hank (his counterpart), i assumed that Hank's hens would join Junior (the picky one). Junior wouldn't let them join his harem. So i let his son...

    dogs and chickens co-existing?

I have had nothing but bad luck when it comes to livesock and dogs. I've lost more chickens to dogs than anything else. There are far fewer strays around here than there were a year ago .Seriously though, i'd find someone else to keep the chickens. someone with no dogs.

What type of ducks for pets?

I've never raised ducks from ducklings... yet. I bought a breeder pair of muscovies and a pair of pekins. All i can tell you is based on my experience with adult birds. Muscovies are nice because they're quiet, and are very apt to go broody. There are two downfalls of 'scovies. one is that they...

    I have a dilemma.

Ok, here's the situation. I just ordered 10 buff cochins and 15 silver leghorns from a hatchery. we will be getting them on the 26th of this month. I want to incubate some of by buff orpington eggs. I calculated it out to where the new hatches would be about 23-24 days younger than the others...

    How squished is too squished?

Well, what you gotta think about is , where are the newborns supposed to go once they hatch? if they're too close together, they will have no room to rest.

How to identify an egg-eating chicken?

what i do is i take out all eggs, wait for another to be laid and watch to see who goes in immeadiatly after. you have to catch them in the act. this probably didn't help, but its the only way i know.

    Incubation question

I wouldn't, because as you know they take different lengths of time to hatch out. the temp of the bator can be thrown off by the removal of the quail eggs/chicks. this could lead to too much adjustment at the later stages of chicken development... or quail... whichever hatches last. What could...

My duck won't lay in the right place.

I have a pekin hen and she refuses to use the space provided in the duck house to lay her eggs. She instead lays them in the pool. Any advice on how to get her to lay in a designated place? I put an old metal trashcan on iut's side in there, and put plenty of hay in it... just as a quick fix. I...

Do you feed your chickens meat....(like chicken)?

My chickens have even eaten their own freshly hatched chicks. Chickens are probably the most cruel and impartial animal I have ever raised. So, yeah I feed them chicken. I also give them crawdads... they love them.

    I'm scared!!!

in my experience, if the chicks are already 2 weeks old, the mama will protect them. I'd let her worry about it.

    Hen keeps laying wierd eggs

I've never seen that, but my hens are giving me brown eggs with white spots on them. the spots are a r3ecent development. I think it's 'cause of the oyster shell i've been giving them. If the eggs aren't making you sick, keep enjoying them.
