New in to chicks and ducks

Hi Nick! I'd love to hear how your coop planning is coming? We just moved from Sacramento to Columbus and are researching the same process.

Mite infestation in bathroom, how to eradicate and how to treat chickens

Hiii! I actually started in wildlife biology too so most of my mite experience is with mites on wildlife and I'm only just now as a chicken tender applying this skillset to agricultural mites. Thanks for the description! You're correct that mite life stages are rather easy to discern based on...

    Dirty vents and deceased birds

Yup, you're right, amprolium would've been the right thing to get. However she was recommending Albon (sulfadimethoxine) because that's what she's familiar with in small animal veterinary practice (not a poultry vet like I said) which she said would need a 6 week withdrawal. I'm glad we didn't...

    Dirty vents and deceased birds

Update: Our CAHFS report came back with primary cause of death as salpingitis and fibrinous coelomitis which is essentially a reproductive issue leading to secondary infection and death. Very hard to diagnose! This is not a contagious condition though so I'm still unsure of what might've caused...

Mite infestation in bathroom, how to eradicate and how to treat chickens

That's great news! If you do see more crawlies, please do post whatever photo you can take. I study mites and ticks and am well-versed in identifying a variety of ectoparasites so I'd be happy to make an educated guess from a poor photo. Regardless, the advice you've been given on use of...

    Dirty vents and deceased birds

Thanks, in fact I just talked with a colleague about submitting to CAHFS too. I didn't realize they offered a backyard poultry service! I'm going to take the carcass there on Monday and see what they determine. Can you elaborate on your thoughts about age and coccidiosis though? I thought it...

    Dirty vents and deceased birds

We've got (or had) 5 hens housed with 3 ducks. A couple of our hens have had chronic dirty vents and some diarrhea. They're housed in a huge outdoor pen (with coop inside) so it's not easy to tell who is laying or what poo looks like in great detail, but it's clear that 2 of them had diarrhea...

    Duck Eye Problem

I’m having a similar problem with my Swedish Black. No respiratory symptoms but a very irritated, foamy or frothy eye. I can tell it is really uncomfortable for her because she keeps shaking her head and trying to rub the eye. No lethargy either. I suspect it is either Mycoplasma gallisepticum...

    Recommendations for duck with laryngitis?

Update: it’s amazing what a little ACV and heat lamp can do to aid the immune system! I’ve ordered meds and still watching closely, but after the first day of providing ACV in their water and offering a heat lamp for extra warmth Stormy started to get her voice back - a soft quack instead of...

    Recommendations for duck with laryngitis?

Totally agree that they are probably not as rare as people think! From what I've been reading, the prevalence of gapeworm in wild birds is mostly unknown and the limited reports in livestock are likely because most farmed birds (i.e. chicken) are commercially raised and not truly free range...

    Recommendations for duck with laryngitis?

Thanks Ravynscroft! It's very valuable to know that yours did not show the classic signs of gapeworm infestation until the last minute. Sounds like it would be wise for me to order these meds.

    Recommendations for duck with laryngitis?

Good question! Pretty certain. Her quack was VERY loud and seemed to match the other Swede's quack up until today. We ordered them together as a hatchling female pullets from Ideal Poultry.

    Recommendations for duck with laryngitis?

Yup. So far she's still actively keeping up with the other Swedish Blue and I watched her eat and drink this morning and this evening. But the laryngitis just started this morning so I suppose she could decline in the next few days.

    Recommendations for duck with laryngitis?

I know what you mean! I was really skeptical there was anything going on since I hadn't heard it myself and we're both new to ducks. I figured it was some feather or gunk in the nostril or grass in the throat. But when the female Swede lost her voice I started thinking this is a genuine illness...

    Recommendations for duck with laryngitis?

@ViolinPlayer123 oh I didn't realize that sometimes males go horse as they age! Agreed that's likely not the case here because one of ours is female but that's really good info to know. Thank you!

    Recommendations for duck with laryngitis?

Hello duck gurus! I'm hoping for some sage advice. We have a mixed flock of two year-old Pekins (one female Daphne, one male Peep) and two 3-month female Swedish Blues (Puddles and Stormy). Peep the male Pekin has had a bit of a cough kinda like he's trying to clear his throat for 3-4 days...

    Chicken and Duck Coop Combo

@Beakertheduck you probably already built yours but in case you modify or if it helps others I thought I'd share what we did. We built a two story coop for our ducks and chickens. The chickens enjoy roosting up higher and the ducks prefer to be closer to ground level. The ducks get straw as...
